I use 16 gr of 2400 in the milsurps with bullets around 150 gr.

For 150 gr boolits in a 30-30 Winchester 94 what would be a good charge?

Since the case is smaller than 30-06, 8mm Mauser, etc I'm thinking 12 gr would be a good start.

Thanks.

I am currently playing around with a 788 Remington chambered for 30-30. It is beginning to look like 14 gr. of 2400 for the bullet 311041 is the best load for my rifle at 100 yd.. Needless to say, MY rifle likes 14 gr. This is not to say that your rifle will like 14 gr. However, you may want to start with 10 rounds each with 13 gr., 14 gr., 15 gr., & 16 gr. of 2400 with a 160 gr to 200 gr bullet at 100 yd. This should give you an idea as to what your rifle likes. Once you get an indication, you can continue to experiment with different loads.

My most common .30/30 load is 15.5 grains of 2400 under a Lee C309-150-F. It's good for 1,739 fps in my Marlin 30AS.

FYI, until recently Alliant listed a 2400 load for .30/30 in their silhouette section: 16.0 grains max under a 152 grain lead bullet. They removed the silhouette section from their web site this year, but it is still in the paper manuals.

I use 16.0 under a 170GC cast bullet in my Savage 340. Great load with no evidence that it is straining anything. Accurate at 1900 fps.

I found some 30-30 or .30 Remington rimless recommendations in one of my old Lyman handbooks. I lost the cover, but it was put out after the Ideal/Lyman #39 which was in 1953. Probably late 50's or early 60's then. Anyway, they recommend a load of 18.7gr. 2400 with a 150gr. .311241 bullet. Their recommended starting load was 18.0gr. at around 2,100fps and max. at 21.0gr. with 2,400fps.

Sounds a bit of a stiff load. But I suppose it was a hunting and not a target load. The old 2400 may have been a bit slower burning of course.

Lyman 45th edition in 1970 did not list 2400 powder nor any loads that developed over 1,700fps. Their highest velocity listed was 11.0gr. Unique at 1,691fps. and 37,300cup using the .311440. They recommended for best accuracy in that bullet a load of 11.1gr. of SR 4756 at 1,573fps. and 36,400cup. Or Herco 9.0gr. at 1,386fps. and 25,800cup.

The later data is still listed in the Lyman Third Edition Castbullet Handbook and I have the 1994 seventh printing.

My 94 likwa 16 gr. 2400, under the 160 Ranch Dog, sized .311 (blt with my lube and alloy and gc) runs right at 168, with vol about 1700.

FWIW- At the CBA match in Spokane on Saturday, the guy who won the Production Class high score segment did so with a Rem 788 in .30-30 with a Lee 150g boolit in front of 12.5g of 2400. I don't remember his exact score, but I think it was 195. I do remember he had 2ea 50's!

I get the best accuary from a lee 309 180 rn gc bullet with about 11-12 grains of 2400. Velocity unknown.(@1200)
Alox lubed but no gas check.
Only 1.050" groups at 100yrds
30-30.

rule of thumb I have picked up is
Plain cast to 160-180gns 10-13grns 2400
Gas check 13-16 grains.
As with everything else "check before using"and aproach higher charges in small incraments.

I had to check some old notes I made on 30-30 with the old Herc 2400. I show 20gr with the 311291 boolit. I also noted TOO HOT beside the load. I've seen some data that showed as much as 22gr but I know that is way too hot. I usuallu use about 18 for a hunting load and 14-16 for tin cans.

Here is some data I worked up in a 336 Marlin 20" Barrel; Federal Cases, Rem 9 1/2 primers, Lee 170gn FN GC cast from WW, water quenched, 50/50 Alox lube.
Sized 0.312"

This is Hercules (old) 2400. 5 shot groups 70 Degrees

16.5gr 1832fps Sd 33 3" @100

17.0gr 1850fps Sd 19 2.4"@100

17.5gr 1900fps Sd 28 2.75"@100

18.0gr 1953fps Sd 31 6.0"@100

I am happy with the results so far, I just haven't had time to refine the
load more.
