22 RF Jackets

I recently bought 15-20K 22 cal bullets made from 22Rf jackets. A friend gave me 20# of 4895 and 5K SR primers. Needless to say, having these cheap/free components, I have been shooting my 223 a LOT. Will I have to consider any different cleaning issues using these brass jackets, compared to copper jacketed bullets?....dale

To answer your question, no, you shouldn't need to alter your cleaning methods.

Brass jacket v/s copper jacket? Surely the cleaning with brass would be far less?

dale2242, have you noticed any difference in bore fouling? How is the accuracy with the new treasures?

303guy , haven`t had different fouling with the brass. May be less than copper but then again, the barrel may be getting smoother with use. I can get MOA with some working up of the loads. Seem to get a few more fliers than with factory bullets. Yes, I do weigh and separate into different weight groups. Most weigh in the 52-53 gr. area with less than 1/2 gr variance. Have 3-5 k 63 gr but haven`t worked with them yet. BTW the 52 gr bullets are HP.

BT Sniper, The bullets were made by a friend of my friend. The maker was 97 when he died so I suspect it took many years. I`m 67 and do not recognize some of the head stamps. Some of the jackets were copper 22rf cases. They haven`t been made in many a year....dale

Have a friend that reloaded 22 Hornet for me back when I first started. He had a swager and I saved all the .22 long rifle that I shot. It's hard to remember to save the case. The newer brass ones won't appreciably wear on your barrel, they're technically softer than copper. I shot the jacket swaged for a year, 40 rounds at a time, no excessive wear. His were 50 grain, straight sided hollowpoints (the little edges of the hp were real sharp and hard).

I used my hornet with 55gr J-words this past weekend and was astounded by how flat shooting and hard hitting it is! It has an effective point blank range of 175yds, varmint. (Lil'Gun is magical stuff!) For now, I am experimenting with paper patching but once I get my swage press and dies sorted, I shall be trying to use the swage cores as RF case cores. But seing those deadly looking hollow points, I might just go that route instead!

dale2242, do you find the hornet to be real sweet to shoot? Mine is light to carry and fits me like a glove. With a suppressor, all the 'recoil' does is push the gun a little off centre sight picture so I can see the strike next to the cross-hairs.


The maker was 97 when he died ...These old folks who keep going so long, warm my heart! My Dad's 90 and still doing stuff in his workshop. It's great!
