I've been looking for a light (125gr or so) hollowpoint for 38 special cast in soft lead. I want it for working up a load for my S&W 637 Airweight.

Anyone have a guesstimate of what the 358311 might weight with a hefty hollow point in it?

I'm looking to imitate the NyClad hollow point shape without the cladding.

I went to the basement weighed 2 358311 @ 166gr lubed. I drilled the first one 1/4" deep with a 1/8" bit weight was 156gr. Second boolit was drilled 3/8" deep with a 3/16" bit for a weight of 147gr. That's with WW alloy. The 3/16 was a big hole but did'nt lighten up as much as expected. I doubt you can get 358311 down to 125 even with linotype. This was'nt a real precise test I just marked the bit depth and drilled em with a hand drill I had lying on the bench. Hope that helps. FB

With a .125" hollowpoint cavity pin, my 358311HP runs 155.2 grains sized and lubed. You might look at a 358480 HP'd. Mine runs at 121.1 grains with a .125" pin and is great in the 9mm./beagle

Great answer. Beat me to it.

I'd just add that this boolit is a rounded SWC shape/design, so it will be ideal for a Nyclad-duplicate in a casting mould. Great shape for a 38.

My Nyclad stuff is all SWC shaped. Found half a box in the discount section of a gun shop.

Roper: I have a 150 gr. SWC HP mould. I currently have a bunch made up of WW's. If you want to try some of these, I can send some along to you. If you want them in a softer lead, I can make some 50/50 Pure/WW's or I can cast some in just soft lead. I'm hoping to save enough pennies that I can get a snubby down the road. I really would like one of the M&P 340's because they are so light. I don't know if I would necessarily shoot many 357's. I also like the S&W 442 airweights real well. It is these hollow point bullets I plan on working up a good defense load for.
Just lemme know .....

Have been using a Lyman 356637 New Hp that is for 9mm/38. It casts at about .360 for a weight of 125 grains. Being bevel based, I've only gotten accuracy to 50 meters in a TC single shot, maybe that's good enough, for what it is.

Gents, Thanks for all your replies, particularly Ohio Rusty for your generous offer.

If the 356637 casts at .360 and 125 grains, that's just what I'm looking for. If that works well in the S&W 637, I'll keep it for a back-up. If not, I trade around for someting else.

Thanks again for all the valuable feedback.
