Took your suggestions about matching boolit size to the cylinder throat. Pulled out my 429421 4 cav. I bought about 1974. Using #2 alloy it cast right at .433 and that is what I sized them to w/lbt soft.
Upper target is the 429421 boolits. Left group, I flinched a couple out of the group, but right target I tried alot harder. Group is 6 shots. 50Ft.
Lower target (both groups) is the 295gr Denver boolit that looks just like a 429421, but with a lot longer base band, but only comes out at .430"

After a trigger job, groups should shrink a bit more. Pretty heavy and rough now.
Of course, my 55+ eyes don't help with group size.

Hard to beat at any age. 7 1/2" barrel?

I'll be tarred and feathered as a heretic for saying this, but my view of the SAA in 44 Special is that it is the ideal caliber for the platform, and better than the 45 Colt in most instances. That is some encouraging work, and I fully agree about 55 year old eyes having an effect on downrange outcomes.

Rockrat,

So were your cylinder throats 0.433 inches? What was the diameter of the bullets before your groups tightened up? I have a Colt SAA in 44 Special and have been shooting 0.430 inch sized bullets with decent accuracy, but perhaps it can be improved.

As said, my earlier boolits were .430", but cylinder throats were .433"(+/- .0005'). Lower target shows the groups. My old 429421 mould (haven't cast with in 30 years)threw boolits right near .433" (maybe .4326") in #2, so thats what I shot. As you can see, a real improvement in group size in upper target. 5.5" barrel in the New Frontier. It has a .428" groove diameter. .005" difference, but shoots OK now. Have a 280gr GB boolit that goes .433" that I am going to try also.
