I was on Freedom Arms web site and saw they were offering this as a new cartridge.

It's not the 500 Linebaugh renamed is it ? :Fire:

Well did what I should have done in the first place. Looked further on Freedom arms site. This is a new cartridge based on a belted case .

But judging from the price of the Freedom Arms revolvers . I believe the Smith in their 500 caliber is the way to go .

This is a SW 500 with a 1.390" case and belted.
I have a SBH Clements Custom 500 (SW 500 1.4" case) as my avatar that shoots 395gr WFNGC at 1580 fps or 425/440gr WFNGC at 1400+ fps.
I am sure the FA will shoot and look great .

I've always liked the Freedom Arms guns . But I already have the Smith in the 460 S&W MAG , so if I decide to get a 50 cal revolver I think I will spend $950 on the Smith instead of $2000 on the Freedom Arms .

Check it out on ;

My first FA sixgun is gonna be in this caliber one of these days! A far more "practical" round than the big Smith IMHO. That X-frame should come with wheels! (Besides, it's one of them new fangled double actions!) :-)

For a good writeup on the .500 WE, go to Gunblast.com (Actually, there are two seperate articles)

Dennis

That belted case is kinda cool....

I dunno , when I picked up a 500 S&W for the first time I thought they needed wheels as well .

But since getting the 460 I do not agree anymore. I've had a couple Ruger SRH's in 480 before and they were no better for carrying.

You want a "handgun" that needs wheels . Tote my Remington XP100R in 260 with the 3-12 Burris . That things as bad as any rifle .

I had to put a sling on my 45-70 BFR! It hangs right at my hip with the grip in my hand and by pushing out against the sling it is easier to shoot offhand. I installed a barrel band also and when I need both hands free, I extend the sling and hook up the other swivel to the barrel so the gun goes across my back. Much easier to drag a deer and much nicer then a huge holster.
This gun is the concealed carry for the jolly green giant!

Well, the extreme quality of FA revolvers and the fact that I'm a S/A nut notwithstanding, I think that the .500 WE is about the maximum amount of "horsepower" that I could hope to accurately manage in a sixgun of "packing porportions", eg holster wear...

The X-frame Smith and BFR are to me "hunting revolver size" and need be carried as such...(not to mention the weight they need to keep recoil below ridiculous levels!) ;-)

JMO,

Dennis

However I DO like the ".45 Colt extra extra long" XVR cartridge! :-)

The 460 S&W MAG is not bad recoil wise . But I really like that SST type bullet they use in the factory loads.

I picked up a FA in 44mag last year and I fell in love with it. My smith 629 has not seen the light of day since. You will not be sorry if you spend the cash on a FA.

I know whatcha mean! Those FAs are built BETTER than a swiss watch. Certainly a piece of "gun art" IMO.....

BTW, I sold my 8 3/8" M29-2 when I found my Ruger 10" Flattop.... ;-)

Your custom is about par with the .500 WE. It spits a 400 gr at nearly 1600 fps. A killerdiller reduced silhouette load is said to be 10 grs Titegroup with a 440 gr boolit* at 1100 fps. Supposed to really slam down the rams.....

Magnum Research is makeing the BFR in 50 AE. You can send it to the custom shop and they will fit the 500 JRH #2? cylinder to it (500 S&W x 1.4")
Then you can get the single action 50 cal for about 1/2 the Freedom arms one.

I bought the 4" S&W 500 and carried it all last Elk season. It was fine for the first few days, then it started getting just a little heavy in a belt holster. A sholder holster would help with it.
Mine has a great trigger and shoots fairly good. I haven't had alot of time to play with it at the range with different loads though.
Factory 400gn ammo isn't bad to shoot. It's only doing around 1200fps from the 3" barrel(1" comp)
I just got some 700gn bullets from Ranger Rick to try in it. They should be lots 0 fun.

I wish Phillips and Rodgers was still in business makeing 5 shot cylinders for Rugers. That would be a more cost effective way into a bigger bore.

A 5 shot Blackhawk would be nice....Wonder why Ruger has never gone that route? Maybe with their .480? I wish Ruger would make something in S/A bigger than .45, everyone else is!

But as much as I love my S/A Rugers, I'd sure like to own ONE Freedom Arms sixgun.....(in .500 WE preferably...)

Are you listening "Santa"? [smilie=1:

I got to daydreaming about the .500 WE this morning and it occured to me that it would be a perfect round to "wildcat" since it has a belt to headspace on. (And I'll bet I'm not the only one with this idea!) How about this brainfart? Neck the .500 WE down to a sharp shouldered .429" in an effort to outrace the .460 XVR's velocity in a shorter case? I'll bet it would burn powder more efficiently even if the capacity was slightly less than the .460's....
Hmmmm....

Remember, I thought of it first! ;-)

Last year I bent the ear of a Ruger Big Wig at the Grand American trap shoot about a 50 cal in either a 5 shot Super Redhawlk or a 5 shot on the BlackHawlk frame ( the streched 454 frame , that they made very few of ).

I was told Ruger is working on it .

Not only do I wish they would make the 454 BlackHawlk , but then put a 500 S&W x 1.4" or the 500 Wyoming Express on that frame .

LOL Acusport even cataloged the 454 Blackhawlk , I think 2 year back , but I don't think any were ever sent to dealers .
I tryed to order one :( :(

Well, one can hope!

A .475 or .50 cal 5 shot SBH would sure float my boat!
