I acquired a S&W 22lr revolver and It does not have a model # on the frame. I thought it was a 17. it has 5 screws and a pinned on front sight,6" barrel. Did S&W not put a model # on the early ones?

SW did not 'number' the firearms until about 56-57. i have a couple of older 4 and 5 screws and none are actually 'numdered'.

were I you, I would spend the few minutes on the phone with Roy Jinks of SW and have him look up the information from his files. He will be able to tell you date of manufacture, and where and when the gun was first shipped. WELL worth the effort and phone call!

Good Luck!

Model numbers on the frame started in 1957, I think.

Take a look at your serial number. Starts with a letter, right?

Here's a K-22 that someone had listed on Gunbroker:

You likely have a K22, which is the same thing as a model 17, just made before 1957.

Before the Model numbers, the name of the model was most often stamped on the barrel. ie. Military and Police, Heavy Duty, Outdoorsman, etc. etc., etc.
