Thanks to everyone on the forum as I am a new member but have been surfing these pages for a while. There is a weath of information contained here. Anyway, I was fortunate today to score 59# of lead and 51# of linotype. I cast for 9mm, 40 S&W and 357mag. Can anyone provide a mixture for these two materials as all I could find of the lasc.com site was a lino/clip-on WW mixture and unfortunately I have no WW to use.

Welcome to the forum.

I think it would help the boys in the band if you specified what the lead is. Pure, soft, ingotted mystery metal, etc.

Folks way more knowledgible than me will be along.

I certainly don't fit that description, but I'll add my two cents anyhow.

Assuming that 59# is soft/pure lead, then I would mix in 3/1 or 4/1 lino/pure. I'm sure you could easily get by with 6/1 also if you wanted softer boolits. You'll want to make that lino last, as it's not a cheap or an easy-to-come-by alloy.

I am sorry but it is pure lead and thanks for the quick replies.

Got that backwards didn't you? :)

3 parts pure lead to 1 part linotype will give you an alloy that is close to wheel weight metal. It will have a little more tin than WW metal actually.

Oops, you're right. :killingpc I meant pure/lino.

That's about right, I use linotype as a single ingot additive. Thought I'd reiterate some, mostly I add some to wheelweight.

My suggestion is to mix it anywhere from 50/50 to 2 1/2 to 1, Lead to lino. You want SOME tin in your alloy, but over 3% is wasteful. If the lino is fresh, and not tin-depleted, then mixing 50/50 will give you 2% tin. 3 to 1 will give you about 1% tin, which is light, IMHO. Some will disagree with me, I'm sure...

So you have 59# of lead - add 25 # of lino and generate 76 # of dang good alloy, and have 26# of lino left over for the next 50-60# of lead you pick up.

I appreciated the advice. I'll probably try about 2.5 to 1 in a small mixture, enough to make about 100 each in each mold I have and have a go at the range.
