Hello all, picked up some vintage Canadian 38 s&w and popped off a few today, I am curious about the copper plating, it's not a jacket just a thin film. What was the thinking here? or just a gimmick?

Can't help on the plating, but those pics sure bring back memories. Nice!

What were you shooting that at, a steel plate? Looks like it flattened right out when you hit it!

I have a "Defender", made in the 40's, that looks a lot like that 925 but with a 4 inch barrel.

Always wondered how "strong" these were. No interest in hot rodding it just wondering about commercial / surplus ammo and what to avoid if anything.

Right now I load light and use anything I find as "component donor's".

No gimmick. That's how you eliminate leading without going through the expense of a full-on copper jacket. It works exceptionally well on low pressure rounds like your .38 S&W, .41 Long Colt, etc. These days, it's most commonly found on .22 rimfire ammo. It's the only thing I'll shoot in my .22s...

From what I've read, they were designed for and issued to corporate security and plant security guards. They are robust and well made. The 925 was a "reissue" of the original but with transfer bar ignition, mine is a 1978 model. I was shooting at a metal plate that my 357 just passes on through. As you can see from the description not a powerhouse but effective for short range. How many ammo manufacturers put that kind of info on boxes these days?
