Over the last 2 weeks I helped( when I could ) a freind move parts , 3 mills , several lathes , a surface grinder and a whole lot more

He is spinning off from his dad's machine shop
A smaller specality parts making busness in a large barn behind his house

He was trying to explain what he was making , trying to understand gave me a head acke :veryconfu :veryconfu :veryconfu

But what I did understand was a lot of the parts will be sent out to be TiN ( Titanium Nitride plated ) and several other platings

As I help him and he helps me to shoot up my cast boolits :bigsmyl2:
And he will be sending seveal orders a week to be plated
He ask if I needed anything plated to reduce friction

We talked about another plating to put on one of my Ruger SRH 454's

But I then got to thinking about moulds
Would it help at all to have a sprue plate or even the top of a mould plated ?

He said he could get me a few sample parts plated for FREE

Any thoughts ?

If it's free what have you got to lose other than a sprue plate that could be replaced for a couple bucks? Try it out and report back on how is goes.

I wonder if it would smooth up the action of a revolver to have some internal
parts done? Of course, if it messed them up, you'd probably never get it back
off. Plus do you want a 'gold' hammer and trigger on your S&W or Colt. . . . . .

...............TiN coating is a first generation coating but still a very widely used one. It's excruciatingly hard, and I think it adds about .0001" to .0002" in thickness to the part. There are harder coatings nowadays but for a sprueplate? :-) There'd for sure be no lead sticking to it.

A TiN coated sprueplate might be the berries, I know that molten lead won't stick to a coated drill bit even if left in the melt. If your cost it free, try a Lee 2-banger sprueplate and see if it helps the galling inherent to these moulds.

Well I am going to take your advice

I will be droping off 2 Lyman and 1 sprur plates I made ( in his shop ) and a Lee 2 hole Sprue plate

As I understand it , when he makes a new part that willl be plated
He sends them a sample or 2 to be plated
They plate it for free or at a low cost to him
If the sample is to spec after the plating
He sends them a shipment of that part to be plated

But the bad part is I have no controll on the time frame

He told me that it will be 3-6 weeks before he is shipping a new order in to be plated

Oh well , free is free

Thanks
John

John, do you know to where he is sending it to be plated? I'm curious if they have a minimum order & how their pricing structure looks.
