how well does the lyman hp cycle in a marlin?
Do they shoot well out to 100-200 yards?
Alloy suggestions, have WW, Pure lead and a bit of really hard Monotype, have even tried a few pure tin, and bags of magnum shot to harden up anything. thanks
If it matters, I use a xlr which I slugged at 457"

The Gould 320 grain HP cast 30:1 weighs out at about 340 from my mould. It feeds flawlessly through my 2 marlin .45-70 and is an admirable performer in the accuracy department. My 1895 CB is a 200 yard deer/elk rifle with this bullet seated over 70 grains of 2F. Can't speak about using smokeless but will advise the use of a felt wad under the bullet regardless of powder charge.

457122hp 24gr 2400 I get 1" groups at 50 yds anytime, I guess it is only 1400 fps.
I love that 1895 cb. I use 16 to 1 lead tin. With a little elevation I can hit the ram at 200.

I have the 457122HP and the Lee 457-340-F molds.

The HP boolit is dropping right at 330gr with straight WW's and the Lee is dropping nearly 340 grains.

For the more comfy side of life;

I'm loading them both with 15g Unique which is just above 1200 fps.

With these identical charges the Lee is 4" @ 100 yards and the HP is 6" @ same distance.

I just got the HP mold so I've only tried the one load for now.

I like these light loads, they're very easy on the old shoulder but quite lethal for the Whitetails this season I'm sure.

Another analogy, on a one gallon laundry detergent jug filled with water I'm getting clean pass throughs without upsetting the water jug from its perch to give you an idea.

When I get time, I plan on softening up my WW alloy just a bit.

Rifle is Marlin GG , its never belched on any of these, the name Mikey just came to mind.

Don't know if this will be helpful or not...[smilie=s:

Soft alloy for the HP. Feeds in my GG, just not too accurate so far - I have only tried a
couple of loads, not enough time yet to find the correct powder and charge.

if i was to root around in my old loading resources, an article in handloader or rifle magazine about 10-15 years ago proved out that the gould hp had the ideal bearing surface to shoot best in micro groove 45-70 barrels. i bought the mold and proved it pretty convincingly to myself. from memory, std primer, about 31-33 gr. of imr4198, a tissue wad over powder and a lee powder scoop of shotshell poly buffer of a volume that filled up case just about to base of bullet, so very lightly compressed. very lightly-just enough to hold everything in it's place. pretty steady performer at 100yds with merit disc aperature sight on the order of 1.5" or so for 5 shots.

had to quit casting for a variety of reasons for a while, so have a couple hundred bullets from montana bullet works sitting at the bench ready to load for hunting season. if you can cast them soft enough to shoot well, they should expand and hold together well. one deer i'd shot with mine, which were wwt/lino quenched while casting, took off the nose of the bullet and left behind about 265 grains of 45 wadcutter, which did a nice job on the deer.

all said, it's my bullet of choice for my marlin.

Mine cycles just fine and groups pretty good at 50 yards. That is as far as I've gotten with this rifle so far. It's on my list for this winter to play with.
