How fast have people been able to shoot cast boolits in their SKS's -- particularly heavy ones like the Lee 155 grain C312-155-2R and the 185 grain C312-185-1R. I've got both of those moulds and want to start trying some loads for them. Read the sticky on it, but I want to try for as fast as possible with good accuracy. I also have a mould for the lyman 311413 (169gr.) and the 311465 (122gr.) -- it's a double mould but with two different boolits. I'd like to use 4895 powder. Or perhaps 4198, but what do people find works best for faster loads?

I got some of those 155s going about 1800fps, pushing them with 2400, but that was not necessarily as hard as you can push them. I was happy with that comfortable plinking load, so I didn't try anything hotter.

Several other guys here on the board play with those things. Hopefully, a few of them will chime in for you.

Other than the C. Harris load (15.0 grains of 2400), I've used both WW680 (discontinued) and RL7 to right @ 2000fps.

The WW680 load was 19.0 grains and the RL7 load was 20.3 grains.

Both were safe in my SKS rifle. If I were you, I would probably use a slower powder (something like H322) if velocity was important to you.

BTW I was desert plinking this past Friday and had no trouble hitting basketball sized rocks consistently @ 200 yards with these loads (offhand). Not sure what more you would want out of a cast bullet and an SKS.

It comforts me to know that our military still trains its soldiers to be competent offhand shooters like that. :brokenima

Of the 7 SKS rifles that I have had over the years, only one was that accurate with jacketed bullets so I'm thinking that is decent accuracy with any bullet/boolit. I've been loading a fat 311291 for a year for my SKS and it is loaded to 1900 FPS and I am happy with its 2 MOA accuracy. It is fun to shoot and rather cheap with my loads. I also modified the gas tube (ala Larry Gibson's mod) and the cases fall withing a small area so brass is easy to find, usually. It ain't pretty but functional, that was my goal.

What's the powder charge for that?

I just tried some lee 155 gr bullets with 20 gr of IMR 4198. The brass ejected just fine from my AK and accuracy was about the same as I get with Wolf steel case ammo. I had to set the sights on 300 meters to get on target at 100 yards but the rifle held the target at about a 5 inch group about par for AKs. No leading or other problems were encountered.

1680 was made for the 7.62 X39.

Edd, mind posting a link, or more info on that brass-keeping mod?
