Apparently we don't have a black powder cartridge forum, per se, so I'll go here because it's milsurp. An original Sharps conversion carbine. Center fire and 3-groove liner. Now, what I need is one or two pieces of [recent mfg] 50-70 Govt brass to check chamber fit. Bore has some surface rust, but rifling is quite visable. It looks like it will clean up quite well. I'm thinking about putting this old gal back into service. I see where Starline (and others) have brass. It's a bit pricey, but I'll go the distance if this pans out. Just need one or two pieces to start with for fit check.

My other problem is that the rear sight is missing (ears are still in place). The screw is broke off and will need to be extracted. A few years ago someone on this board or on the old Shooters board offered one for a small amount that seemed to be reasonable, but I opted at the time not to go forward, because at that time I was not aware of everything I know now. Don't remember for sure, but it might have been Gussy (you still there - was it you?). I guess the other option might be to mount a period correct tang sight. Maybe even rebarrel (rifle) and mount some new furniture. The existing stock has patchbox. SN is sub 100K by only a few. There's a groove worn in the wood on the left side, apparently from riding a scabbard on the Powder River, or so the story goes.

Of course, none of this might happen, too. If it comes about that this gun has any historical value, it may just stay like it is. We'll see. Might be worth more to a collector or museum than me. This is one of those times when you just wish they could talk.

Sooo, can anyone part with a piece of 50-70 brass? sundog

Sundog, here are two links for ya.

http://www.ssfirearms.com/

http://www.lodgewood.com/

They may have orgionals. They also offer real good repops on many parts including sights. I would give them a call.
Both are good firms to deal with. They have gotten a bunch of my money over the years Anyway I would fix the thing as orgional and shoot it.
