I'm having a challenge slugging an Italian Vetterli 1870/87/15 (6.5 Carcano.)
Visual inspection of the bore shows rifling, and though the bore is dark (even after repeated cleaning) the rifling is distinct.
Yet each time I slug the barrel the slug comes out smooth, at .258", with no rifling engraved.
I could see .258 being the lands - but I'm expecting grooves around .264.
I've tried to go just a few inches down the muzzle and bring the slug back out.
I know some Carcano's (unsure if that includes the Vetterli's) used progressive rifling - would that do this?
