I am looking for information,,,guidance even....

I found a revolver in 44-40 cal. (not black powder) distributed by the EMF corp. and I believe it was produced by Pietta (or Uberti?)
Does anyone have experience with this make/ model?
The asking price is $400 which seems high to me.....what is a reasonable price for this used revolver in very good (90%) condition?

finally,,,is the 44-40 cartridge easily reloaded??

thanks

It sounds like that would be near new price for a Pietta. I paid $AU 675 last year with the actions slicked up. They are a nice gun, make that a really nice gun. I'd be staying away from older ones unless they were real cheap. The earlier ones were not real good. They are an excellent gun nowadays though. The 44/40 is ok to load, but the neck is very thin (which is an advantage sealing off the chambers and preventing sooting and blowback) and if you are not careful you will crush it. They are nice to shoot and historically correct to boot.

Not really, just what I heard on this board. Get a price for a new one, I'm sure it will not be much different to what that used one is going for. The Piettas sell for abot 2/3rds of the price of a Ruger here.

i picked up two in the 90's and it literally sucked.
they didn't make it 15 rounds with win factory stuff before they went back to the store.
too bad too as the groups were actually good.
don't regret it one bit though as i got a pair of usfa rodeos best pair of revolver i own in the 6 gun style.

$4c for a used one ain't bad, it's not particularly a bargain, but not bad. Around here, new Rugers go for About $5c's +, a Beretta or Taurus for around $450+-. However, that would be for a 45Colt; the 44-40's don't hold their value as well around here, and they are harder to sell. It just depends on how bad you want it...I have been looking for one of those EMF 1875 Remington's, but I can't find anything around here. I believe I will just make due with my '58's, and probably get a converter cylinder for one.

Ifyou can get a Ruger new for an extra hundred bucks, I know where my money would be going. $400 for a pig in a poke or $500 for a gun that is built like tank (and built in the US, where you live). Grab a 44 mag and use 44 specials, easy peasy to load and reliable to boot, or go for a 45 for the romance.

Good luck with it. I wouldn't be buying a Pietta until I had all the facts and we don't seem to be able to provide you with manafacture dates, etc. I love my Piettas, but have a Armi San Marco, which is about 15 years old and it needed a new hammer and trigger, even though it has only ever fired one box of ammo.

At those prices, I wouldn't be springing $400 for an unknown quantity Pietta.

thanks guys....
I think the suggestion about the 44Mag and using 44 special loads is where I am headed

You are on the right track there, thats where I started..................... 9-10 SAs later.......... Here we are :) Good luck with it. Get yourself a big hat and try Elmer's loads. I stopped short with the cigar though.
