When cleaning up my shop> 400 rounds of Silver Tip 7.62x54R ammo, and 480 rounds of 7.62x54R copper washed Russian. It has been a long time since I have had a rifle that shot this, so I guess I will have to get one.
I have three choices one get a rifle, two sell or trade it, three pull it down sell the bullets use the powder and trade the cases with the primers.
Choices, choices, choices what to do?

Choice #1, send all ammo to me; choice #2, get a rifle and shoot it up!

Pulling the bullets seems the worst of the three choices.

If you forgot you had it the value is zero so if you buy a rifle you can shoot nearly 1000 rounds for free. Good logic? I also believe eating a chocolate bar can be cancelled out by drinking a diet soda.

I want some of that diet cola! My Doctor keeps after me because he says I am over weight, I keep telling him I have weighed 240# since I was 17 and it is not going to change any time soon I hope. I am 70 so I am use to 6' 2" and 240 to old to change now.

If you happen to have a .303 British, you can use the bullets and the powder charge reduced to load .303 Brit. I haven't done this myself, but an experienced reloader should be able to come up with some proportion to reduce the charge for starting loads based on medium-speed powders you find listed for both 54R and .303 in reputable manuals. Just today I fired the last old cordite .303 milsurp rounds I had bought a few years ago. I won't miss that nasty stuff at all - it had to be cheap (at the time) to make the cleanup worth it; but I will say it was fairly accurate stuff.

Higgins beat me to it. I have some crappy 7.62x54 ammo that wouldn't group for
sour apples. I pulled the bullets and saved the powder. I worked up a load (the
loads varied about +/- 4 grains!!) with the salvaged powder and bullets in my
.303 Brit. Shoots great in that rifle, far more useful than it was originally and I can
shoot the Enfield for the cost of primers (which USED to mean really cheap !)

I figured that reducing the charge by 20% and working up to std velocity would work,
and it did fine. I need to pull a bunch more down, when I get some time . . . . .

Hey Freighter,

Get an RCBS bullet puller and a collet and pull em down I say. If not, Big 5 sporting goods has Mosin Nagant rifles on sale for $99 out here in Kalifornistan.

And if you don't get a Mosin, I'll bet you know somebody who does and would love to have that ammo. It USED to be cheap, but no longer is. It's a pretty valuable commodity as is, and I have a hard time recommending tearing it down. Heck, if I were close to you I'd make you an offer.

The czech tends to stick in the chamber of my two mosins, so I've started pulling it to reload in brass casings. I also keep the tips for my smle. Also they will work for reloading the 7.7mm arisaka.

Big 5 has MNs on sale for $99 right now.

What else do I need to say?

I'd opt for finding a 7.62 x 54 R in an 1895 Winchester and then shooting them. I had a Mosin once, one of the very few rifles I ever got rid of and sold. I never could get it to shoot for beans, I tried everything I could think of, different bullet diameters, different loads, hand loads, factory, etc. The best load that ever shot in that thing was 4" with Winchester white box.

I really liked the cartridge, enjoyed loading for it, hated the rifle. I think the 1895 would be a much more "refined" way of getting rid of all that spare ammo! Especially if you could find one of the few that never made it to Russia. I heard Peterson's in Albuquerque, NM had a pari of them a few weeks ago, but they were sold not long after hitting the floor.

Has everybody forgotten that the 7.65 Argen. Mauser eats that bullet also? I`m always looking for fodder to load my Brits, my Mosin and my Argen. with.Robert

Freightman: you need to learn to quit resisting devine guidence.I have developed this sensitivity to the point that finding a few pieces of brass will send me in quest of a rifle to fit.[smilie=s:
