Another idea pillardrill put me up to!:drinks:

(There is much fun to be had on these forums!)

The 'prime' casting

Nose cavity swaged

Nose shaped and cavity opening reduced and boolit sized to two-diameter

The finished paper patched boolit

The final size of the cavity is somewhat reduced during the nose swaging process but its depth remans and it is still larger than the opening.

.............There is a jacketed HP (don't recall now who makes it) that is done the same. A rather 'Large for caliber' HP is swaged in and then a final nose bump closed it's mouth up to a much smaller hole size. It's premise was that the weaker sidewalls would collapse down around the large internal void, and would then be spread outward. Due to the molecular adhesion of lead, unless the slug hit something hard after mushrooming it could produce a sizeable amount of expansion. The reason I heard was to negate the sometimes problem of the HP packing full of material, and then acting like a solid.

303, I'm betting that thing is gonna drop whatever you shoot with it...

nice, so you swage with the GC on?

If I remember right, he actually casts the boolits from a mold (its the HP that was swaged). The GC is simply cast in place.

Yup. The gas check forms the base plug of my nose pour mold. I have made a new mold for plain base boolits. I just used what boolits I had on hand for development.

303,

maybe it's a stupid question but do you size the paper patched boolits? I sized mine, patch and all, with no ill effect.

No, I don't size the patched boolit. I am thinking of doing it though because that would allow me to size the core to the very limits. There is always some variation in finished patch thickness. Also, if there is just the slightest overlap of the ends the boolit might stick in the throat on extraction or maybe not want to chamber (if the core is sized to the very limit).

All my playing around with a 22LR bullet swaging set up has given me an idea on how to get my sizer dies exactly how I want them, bore size wise.

303,

I swaged mine and added a coating of dry lubricant, the dry greased patch if you wish :-)

Do you mean you swage the patched boolit or just the core?

There was time I thought about swaging the core into the patch but haven't figured out how that might be made possible. The may not be subject to any axial forces that would tear or crumple it. That would mean getting the inner core of the core to flow axially with the outer boundries being pushed radially to tightly fit the patch. A bit difficult for a mere mortal such as myself. But I bet it could be done!

303,

I swaged the core, then knurled the core, patched it coated it with some dry lube and sized it in a boolit die.

There is a tool which compress the cork before pushing it into the bottle. But we are talking boolits not bottles :-) Love both of them.
