The same summer that I worked with my 38-55 and 45-70 Marlin Cowboys , I also worked with a 336CB in 30-30.
With this one the first mold I tried was the Lee 170 grain FP GC , it shot very well. It shot very well with this bullet and 17.5 grains of SR4759. I also had thw Lyman tang on this rifle.
The day after I got the big 6 point with the 45-70 , I was back out in the same stand. And at about the same time the 6 came by two does appeared , but from a different direction . When they got to what I later found out was 40 yards I shot one . She ran 20 yards and rolled up.:)
That was the first deer I had ever shot at or hunted for with a 30-30 and I started hunting in 1969. Matter of fact that is the first 30-30 I ever owned.
Since that time I've picked up quite a few other 30 cal FP molds and some spitzer molds. I've also gotten a few more 30-30's all Marlin's except for one Savage 99.
I've spent a fair amount of time shooting cast 30-30's since then . And have tried a lot of 150 and 170 molds. The ones that are working well for me now are the RCBS 150 , Saeco 150 , Lyman 172 and Lyman 170HP . I have used the 150 and 170 Lee molds and thou they work well the others seem to do just a bit better.
I have a Marlin 336SC in 30-30 that will probably get tried in 2006 with the Lyman HP. I also have a marlin 36SC that will probably get tried with the RCBS 150 and last but certainly not least my 1893 Marlin in 30-30 will most likely get tried with the Saeco 150 at some point.
The only complaint I have is that after I get another marlin that I shoot cast in and is alright for deer . I get a load worked up kill a deer and go to another. So rarely do I have time to take them out again:???:
