Could you all please share your favorite .30 caliber cast boolit for deer sized game. I am looking to get a .30 cal mould to work up some hunting loads for my .308 Tikka T3 lite and also possibly for a lever action 30-30 so a flat point would be preferrable, but not nessacary (i can always get another mould for the 30-30 at a later date). My biggest concern would be terminal performance as I can play with alloy and speed to get the accuracy where it needs to be and I would prefer not to get into the hollow-points just because of the difficulty of working up loads with soft alloy and the leading that comes with it. Also in the areas I hunt i would VERY RARELY have to shoot past 100 yards so heavier boolit trajectory would be no problem.
So if those of you that hunt with your .30 caliber cast boolits could please share some of your boolit performance expierience with me I would appreciate it

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Saeco 315 FPGC

any 150-170 grain Flat Point Gas Check design that fits and shoots will work on a deer, especially within your perameters listed. I have a stiff load of H335 and 311440's for the winnie 94 that I hope to lay some smack down with this fall. I am working with a variant of the saeco 315 that I hope to have ready for November in the 308 also.....we shall see.

Agree. I have absolutely nothing but praise for the Lee C309-170-F bullet, which is simply a clone of the Lyman design for the 30-30.

I don't hunt deer with it, but it is easy to cast, loads easily, is accurate at near-factory speeds, and ought to shoot through a deer lengthwise.

357maximum,

What is the variation of #315? I have this mould but rarely cast with it because it's such a bear to lube. Mine (5 lube grooves) has all of the center driving bands shallower than the bullet diameter and running it through the lubesizer gives solid lube from base band to front driving band. Curious how your dealing with this. Notice in the photo how only the base band sizes and ya get lube from there to the nose, it looks like a solid lube boolit and ya can't even see the center driving bands.

SAECO #315

I also have SAECO #307, a 180 gr FPGC that does well out of my 308 and 30-30.

:hijack:The stock Saeco 315 is tapered and could be pan lubed or lubed with something along the lines of a Pope luber (internally tapered die to match the boolit taper- doesn't size, just lubes). You might be able to tumble lube it as well.
Hijack over, back to your regularly scheduled thread...[smilie=l:

SAECO does not recommend sizing the #315 as it is a tapered boolit. I do size mine to .310 and get excellent accuracy with it in my 308 Win.

311041
311291

Both of these boolits shoot exceptionally well in my 30 cal. guns.
Took two deer last year with these one each. The 311041 was in a
Marlin 3030 and the 311291 was in a Mauser 308.

311041 , 311291 and ANY accurate 150 to 185 cast bullet. I have a pointy 185 grain bullet that I size with a flat nosed top punch that works extremely well on deer at ranges not over 125 yards (farthest I've ever used it so far!)

Never heard a bad word about the 311284 if you like a heavy weight.

Glad to hear the votes for the 311041 as this is the one I was leaning towards. There is a group buy going on now for a NOE copy and I just needed to talk myself into it:bigsmyl2:

My only concern was the small caliber and therefore small meplat if not hollowpointed. I guess i could pay the extra $35 and get one cavity hollowpointed an do a little experimenting!

:grin:I have had very good luck with #311291 and #31141 in both of my .30 cal. rifles.
Either one will feed well in lever actions.

the rcbs 150 and 170 fp gc's do well i either the 30-30 or the other 30 cals as a matter of fact the 150 is the best one in my 94 and in my wifes 30-06.
my 308 likes the 165 silhouette gas check, and my bolt action 30-30 prefers a loverign design the others won't shoot at all.
guess thats why there are so many different designs.

...........Yeah and you could bump a FN on it in the sizing die. Should be able to penetrate through a phone pole lengthwise.

357maximum,

What is the variation of #315?

Rick

Mine is a Lyman 311466 with a nose modification that mimics the saeco 315....it works really really really well in 2 30/30's and shows alot of promise in the 308.

For good all round performance in a selection of .30"s, and other calibres, you'll be hard pushed to beat the Loverins.

Heavier the better in my book too.

311407, 311466, 311467, 311014.

Clintsfolly - sounds like you have som experience with the performance of this one on game - what are your thoughts about solid vs hollowpoint on this one. As I stated earlier I would like to stay away from the hollowpoint just for ease of casting but I was worried about the performance of a straight thru .30 caliber hole on deer with no expansion

+1 on the Lee 170 gr.. I cast it with 50/50 WW/lead and push it about 1800 fps.

Here's my pick from Mountain Moulds this is a 220 RNFP that casts at 313 and was designed for my Argentine Mauser, but sized to 311 has worked so well in my Krag at 2000 fps that it is my go to hunitng load.

31141 (311041 new version) 30/30 thru 30/06 works for me.

Lyman #311041 is my first pick because both my 30-30s happen to like 'em.

agree on RCBS180 FN. About the only boolit I use in .30 caliber anymore

311041 for a middleweight and the 311290 for a heavyweight. Sadly lyman stopped making the 311290.
