Can anyone help me out and tell me what a good conical boolit style is for a .44cal BP pistol? Im just looking for my kids to do some light plinking and killing soda cans.:D

I have had good results with the Lee conical for both the 44 caliber and 36 caliber BP revolvers. I have even used the 44 for some cartridge loads, though there are better choices out there for that application.

I've had good luck with the lee conical too. Though, for what you describe, a good .454" round ball will do the trick quite nicely.

I second the .454 RB.
Very accurate at 50yds. Can be loaded lightly. More bearing area than the .451, .457 will definately be an issue.
It depends on what .44 you have. Uberti, or Pietta with the Colt, or Navy. The Walker, Dragoon, they definately take .457.
For a plinker, I would go with the RB rather than the Conical.

What docome31 said. Different guns take different size round ball. My Ruger needs 457. I'd use RB for plinking. They're easy to come by and shoot very well with most loads.

I have the Lee conical molds for the 36 and 44 caliber revolvers, mine are HPs.

As much as I use them, I still keep coming back to the RB for the majority of my C&B shooting. Historically, that seems to be the choice also as the RB is mentioned in many of the old references and journals as the load to use.

Round balls are best. Load a light load of 20 gr then fill the rest of the chamber with corn meal or cream of wheat so the ball seats on it. Very pleasant for the kids to shoot and they don't have to eat the cereal! [smilie=p:
I use an extra powder flask set for the corn meal.
