Thanks to this forum I decided to take up casting. I acquired a Lyman 358430 mold for .38 Special so I could shoot 200 grain LRN in IDPA. I was just hoping to make a nice, mild, minor load. I found that, using Trail Boss. However, it got me to thinking. I decided to see if I could make major safely in .38 Special, with the idea that I could get one of my .38/.357 revolvers cut for moon clips and shoot it in SSR; much cheaper than buying a new revolver for ESR.
So, after looking for data, and having just a little success, mostly with older manuals, I decided to give it a "shot", and loaded up some test rounds. I got there, with a little room to spare, using both HS-6 and 2400. The HS-6 load averaged 876 fps and the 2400 load averaged 875 fps out of my 4" 681. I only needed 825 fps. The best news was that both loads were pretty mild in the recoil department (they were very close as the average velocities show, but for some reason the 2400 load felt a little softer shooting to me). On the pressure side, no flattening of primers at all, no sticky extraction, nothing to suggest high pressures.
So, it was a good day at the range.
