Usually every year I try and take a couple deer with Marlin levers that have tang , peep or open sights and that are shooting one of my home cast bullets.
This past season I used my Marlin 1893 in 32-40 caliber. At the time the only suitable mold I had for that rifle was the RCBS 32 cal GC 170 grain mold that I use in my 32 Speciels.
Well I got it to shoot pretty well with open sights out to 50 yards, if I had a tang sight for it I would have extended the range to 100 yards . But since I didn't I set up in places that I couldn't shoot over sixty yards.
I hunted the evenings for 3 days before I saw a deer . Finally on the third day I had a 3 point come in , I ranged him at 46 yards and since he was standing there bothering a sapling I shot him . The buck ran about 25 yards and rolled up.
The load I used was the RCBS 170 GC with 15 grains of XMP5744 . My chrony is messed up , but near as I can figure this load should only be doing about 1250fps.
Since all this ocurred I've acquired a new Lyman 170 grain PB and an old lyman #321297 GC that should pour at about 182 with WW's.
There aren't any old lever calibers that I don't like but I think the 32-40 is one of my favourites :drinks:
