does anyone know of a good target load for a 30-30 carbine shooting a 170 grain plain base lead boolit? is load density critical-? using Unique would yeild minimum density- I'd like to keep the velocity down.

I was able to get reasonable accuracy using 165-gr plain-base bullets with a load of 7.0 of 700X (easy to remember that one!). It chronos at 1295 fps. No filler. I don't think that fluffy flake powders care much where they lie in the case - and they certainly don't stay still with the "leafblower effect" of the primer blast anyway.

Seven grains of nearly any fast flake powder work almost as well and your gun might like a different powder than mine. Clays, RedDot, Bullseye, Solo 1000, Nitro 100, TiteGroup, Promo and several others are possibilities.

8.0 grains of Unique behind a .309 170FN is my standard 30-30 plinking/target load.

I use 22 gr IMR4895 for 100 yd shooting. Don't know vel but don't get any leading using ACWW bullets.

Hi TAXMAN1169 Dont have a plain base load, but I do shoot a LEE 170 gr without a gas check and have gotten good results. I use Unique on just about everything. Its not position sensitive. 6.5 grs. does very well for me at about 70 yards. Lubed with Lee liquid alox and not sized. My mold drops the just a little over .309. May give you a starting point. Good luck and Good Shooting---------------Papa Smurf
