View Full Version : One thing pleasing from my test results.

One thing I did when testing my first boolits was to try to trap one to examine post firing.

I set up a large Welch's grape juice bottle, large (1.46 gallon) bleach bottle and three milk jugs all filled with water.

Shot from about 10 yards and it blew right through the first 4. I thought it had just dented the 5th but then found it had passed through very low and out the bottom (and into the brush pile where I'll never find it).

IMO, that's good penetration for a 200 grain out of a .44 over a relatively light charge.

If you're ever attacked by 5 jugs of water, you know what load to use!

Has anyone tried wet newspaper?

Something like paper mache?

Wetpack (wet newsprint) or wet phone books are a great expansion test medium They often yield sim. results to balistic gel, but w/ less penetration. Bullets I have recovered from large game animals look amazingly like those taken from wetpack.

One on left was wetpack, one on right was 600# Kudu bull.

I am glad to see everyone has a sense of humor, I hate those nasty jugs myself.
But be prepared when testing hard cast. My .44 made 33" of soaked phone books and newspaper, the .475 went 37". The .475 went through 14, one gallon jugs of water, boolit was gone somewhere in the woods.

Very true. Most expanding handgun bullets will stop in 4-5 1gal jugs or 12"-13" of wetpack. Go hardcast & you'll need at least 24" of wetpack, more for the really big fast movers. Even the sedate 300gr @ 1000fps 45colt will penetrate further than a 400gr soft @ 2200fps from a 404jeffery.

I picked up a couple of large suit cases at an auction for a buck. I stuffed the cases with rags and sit behind my water jugs. If the boolit passes thru all 4 jugs it is then trapped in the suit case. The hole in the side of the case tells me where to look for the boolit. Masking tape covers hole for next shot.
