Waiting for my P/T appointment today and there was a F&S in the magazine rack. Thumbing through(Jan/09 issue), I found an article listing what THEY said are the top 10 all time deer rifles. I was surprised to find that I had #8, a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70.

Can't say I disagree. I love my GG.

I always lived in the past and I guess that's why I've always loved muzzle loaders, but as I get older, I find myself going back to hunting in the late 40's and 50's. Lever actions just seem right for this period in my life. I enjoy walking around trying to jump shoot quail and rabbits with my double.

Shucks, I may buy an Elmer Fudd hat to go with my new bygone era. Don't think I'll ever give up my Guide gun though.
Funny how you remember things fondly though...as I recall, Virginia had almost no Deer to hunt with my lever action in those days.

Just about any BP front stuffer that will shoot straight.

Just about any .22 RF rifle that will shoot straight.

That already accounts for A LOT of deers! A LOT. Probably more than anything else used in this country. Think about it. Smokeless is still a fad compared to how long BP was used.

So what's the criteria for picking them? Sales, usefulness, harvest numbers? I imagine that there's been more deer killed with an arrow (before whitey arrived) than anything else. But that was well before marketing statistics and sales surveys...
