1908 Brazilian Mauser w/LER scope mount

This mount is very similar to the 1909 Argentine and to many other 98 Mauser models. They're not all dimensionally identical though. With this rifle the hole through the rear sight base is too low to use buttonhead screws so I lathe turned a pin for a close fit.

This is another one of my shop rifles. It came from Century Arms for $18 completely encased in rust. The bore is pretty good and the bolt escaped any pitting. It headspaces on a field gauge and is actually quite a smooth and nice handling rifle despite being completely pitted on the outside.

I see potential!! At least its consistent. I have several other 7x57 Mausers so I'll have to try these loads through them. Its a light 130 gr purchased cast bullet.

The rifle started throwing bullets into never never land, completely off the paper. I didn't notice until later.....

Notice the position of the NcStar 4x32 handgun scope. This is where the eye relief put it for a nice repeatable sight picture. Its ideal off-hand and off the bench. The mount is very nice and will need no tweaking.

Apparently that particular 1908 Mauser is a bit large for .285" 130 gr cast bullets (purchased). They're keyholing but they're keyholing in a nice pattern :grin:.

I have a better condition m/1908 Brazilian as well as a nice m/1895 Chilean and a m/1893 South African-Chilean 7x57. I'm going to shoot this pitted old thing with j-type bullets in the next week to see how it acts then I'll remove the mount to use as a model for some others. The rifle itself is one of my shop rifles but it has a pretty nice bore.. just oversize.

That mount is the slickest thing I've seen in years...time to fire up the lathe and mill! Assuming that most Mauser rear sights are dimensionally similar, it could be transferred from rifle to rifle without a lot of fuss. Since I'm at that point in life where irons seem to be "fuzzy" this looks like a very good option.

Unfortunately all Mauser rear sights are not created equally.

For example, the K98k and Persian 98/29 have a removable tangent bed rear sight. The 1908 Brazilian and 1909 Argentine do not. The tangent is built in to the rear sight base.
Even those rear sights that appear to be the same aren't dimensionally identical enough to use one insert between different rifles.

This will give you an idea on all the different sights. If you need some assistance let me know. Its strange to say how much time I've devoted to studying rear sights but its really been interesting.

I'm impressed. Great idea. How does your scope mount compare with receiver tapped mounts for accuracy? Is it harder to use a scope further away from your eyes?

I like seeing these, gives me some ideas for a Madsen model 47 that I have. LER would be the only way to go on it.

You might think that's an easy question to answer but it's not. I'd have to have a lot more experience shooting both to give a good answer. Until then, I can't.


Is it harder to use a scope further away from your eyes?

It takes some getting use to, that's for sure. If you've shot conventional receiver-mounted scopes a lot then you may not like LER. You may not give it the time to get used to it. It's really a personal thing. But the whole point isn't whether one is better than the other, it's about having optics on a rifle that you can't drill & tap due to not wanting to destroy the collectible value. I cases like that you just have to adapt your eyes and style to fit the circumstance.

You have to be careful what scope you get too. Notice how the ocular bell on Dutchman's rifle is behind the receiver ring. I'd say that's really an intermediate eye relief scope. I bought a Bushnell Trophy 2-6x and its a LER, meaning arms length pistol scope. It'd have to be mounted out on the barrel somewhere to get the eye relief right. So I use cheap-o scout scopes off ebay on my Krags. With them the ocular bell sits back like the one above.

My LER mounts are made specifically to accommodate the NcStar scopes. The eye relief is 8-10" and yes, is rightfully "intermediate". But that's why my mounts are so cool:). Having the scope that much closer is really a better sight picture than having it way out in front.
