This is the first incarnation of this Gewehr 1898 Mauser LER scope mount. Its long been in the cranial file until the last couple weeks. This first one needs some tweaking but its the most solid LER mount of any I've done or will do. The Gew98 rear sight base just presents a huge flat stable area to mount and the grooves along each side of the rear sight base provide very nice grasping grooves for the clamps.

Test fired today. I had to move around the 4x32 NcStar scope for 3 rifles. So it took a while to get dialed in. I used Portuguese FMJ military 198 gr bohunk full power 8x57 and it beat my shoulder pretty good. I was flinching like a little girl.

Once I got it on paper I keep feeding those Portuguese 198 gr FMJ into the target. The barrel got smokin' hot so I left it alone for a while and ate lunch while it cooled. There's about 12-13-14 rds in there.

The first target with cast bullets. Mild load.

2nd target started showing promise.

3rd target still holding steady.. with the univeral flyer caused by the flyer fairy.

And then it was revealed.

I was very surprised that this raggidy old 1917 Mauser Oberndorf that spent a great portion of its like in Turkey could/would produce accuracy like this. I've barely fired this rifle in all the years I've owned it. Like a few others I consider this to be one of my shop rifles. That's 5 shots into about 3/4" @ 50 yds. This rifle has potential that until now has been hidden by its gray hair and boney knees.

The scope mount is vunderbar.

Another noce looking, and solid mount. The rifle looks like a performer.
Do you have a pic of the naked rear sight base, can't quite envision the attaching
method.

OK, you've got quite a nice ledge to grip. You do a good job of taking
advantage of the original geometry of the base and getting a nice solid
grip on it.

Thanks.
