Was looking thru a catalog and saw this stock. I saw some pics of SKS's outfitted with it and like the look. But then I saw they had listed a gas port tube and rod seperate for this stock.
Anyone done this swap and could tell me what's involved. Also curious about polymer mags for SKS.

Remember most modifications for the SKS are total JUNK. The T6 stock in question seems to all in all get fairly high reviews on MidwayUSA, sorry but I have no 1st hand experience with this stock. My Chinese SKS sports an ATI Monte Carlo stock which I am very happy with (after some minor modifications.) Not real sure why they have the gas port tube and all sold separately, but my guess is that it is so that you do not damage the original one trying to tap the rivets out, or maybe it is for the guys who already damaged their original one and need to buy a new one. As for the high cap mags, TAPCO makes some that seem to be fairly reliable. I never liked removable mags for my SKS because all the ones I am aware of still require that the bolt be open for a mag change, this to me defeats the purpose of a detachable mag. One upgrade that I have recommended the most for SKS owners is Tech Sights, they are a rear peep sight for the SKS that makes the sight picture infinitely better then the original.

Well, if you're going to go that route, then Tapco makes the best stuff.

However, if you want an AK, then I recommend selling the SKS and getting an AK.

Seriously, you will spend about the same cash and for the same money, I'll take and AK over the tacticooled SKS any day.

Not that there's anything wrong with a good SKS! I own a nice one myself, but its stock and going to stay that way.

When I want AK-like features, I reach for one of my AK's...

I have a T6 stock on a SKS, I throw away the piece than goes on the gas tube.

I bought the best gas tube money can buy from DC Engineering, and it came with a shroud. To piss off all the whinning liberal lawmaking, who dont even know what a shroud is.

Every SKS I work on, I show the T6 to those folks, most buy them.

I built this rifle to be nose heavy with a AK-74 muzzle brake. I can shoot it one handed all day long.

look ma no sights

And it will out shoot most AKSs without the weight

I have a folding stock on it now and it's been great. Not sure I really want to change but was thinking on it.

I'm afraid that I just don't get it.

Why do people buy an SKS, and then try to turn it into an AK?? .....If the buyer really wanted an AK, .....then there are plenty of them out there, and the prices (in spite of Obama) are still pretty reasonable!

I bought my Yugo SKS two years ago for $195; ....and I bought it because I wanted a basic, reliable, semi-auto combat rifle. It fills that role beautifully; ....And the ability to turn the gas system on and off makes it a delight with sub-sonic cast loads.

Do I expect it to out perform an AK in terms of rounds-per-minute??? .....NO!

Do I expect it to outshoot an M4 Carbine?? ........NO!

Will it shoot what I need shot in ten rounds?? ........You Betcha!!!!

There are an awful lot of under-rated guns out there that actually do the job they were designed for very well: .......And a stock SKS is one of them!

I still have the folder on my Yugo, but either the Mote Carlo w/pistol grip or the military stock is going back on it. If I put the wood back on I'm removing a lot of it to slim it down. I also want ot add the Tech sight and some parts to get it 922 compliant, not that anyone had ever asked me about that.

FWIW, my folder stinks as a rifle stock, but sure makes it handy in a truck.

Yes!!! .....And that's another thing I have been wondering about: .......Has ANYONE ever been checked out for 922 compliance?????

.......Or is it just another one of those unenforceable "paper tigers"???

Don't want a AK. Asked about an aftermarket stock. Lead Fred I just got to see your pics. That looks awesome.

It's enforceable. But the only time I realistically think someone is going to have a problem is if your gun is in a major crime or you get that 1 in a million ATF agent who stops by your range.

I want to make mine compliant just to avoid the worry. I still have that "do the right thing" idea that my Grandmother instilled in me. But the lazy, cheap shyster in me wonders if a guy was to take all the standard parts that need to be replaced and either stamp or electro pencil "USA" on them?....... I'm just saying....

If you choose the "full Tapco" treatment, then you will be 922r compliant.

Remember that its the countable imported parts that are of concern. If you replace all of the furniture, remove the bayo and use US-made magazines, you will be under the 10 imported countable parts allowable.

Barrel
Receiver
gas piston
operating rod
bolt carrier
bolt
hammer
trigger housing
trigger
sear

That's 10 even - your good.

I had about decided to leave my folding stock in place and just get a red dot scope and mount for it. But today I got an email from J&G gun's saying they have the Tapco on sale for 59.95. Decisions, decisions.

My wife is a 5 foot Asian woman, she does nto want to carry around the wieght of magazines full of bullets, not does she want to be in a war.

This is her light weight, light recoil protector. You dont need 10 rounds, let alone 30 for this mission.

Fred, if she likes the SKS, you should have her try one of these:

I bet the SKS would stay in the safe after she shot the carbine :)

I think Tapco makes adjustable stocks for these too.

I pondered between the two for about a year. I could not find a M1 for under $500, and then there are the magazine carry weight again.

I dont have $500 in her SKS fully deck out. I dont think Ive seen 30 cal ammo for $200 for 1000 rounds either.

Im still sorry I didnt get one, now they are $6-700 :-(

Yeah, they continue to go up in value. But, so does every other firearm it seems.

I handload and so the price is more a function of components on that side.

The SKS is more gun than the carbine anyway - and will serve very well in its current mission! :drinks:
