Hey guys,
Could anybody tell me if it is OK to neck up .270 brass , trim it and make it 30-06 brass? I'm wanting to cast for a 30-06 I got my hands on but I have very little brass for it. I have a bunch of .270 Win. brass. Does it make the neck too thin?
Thanks, Dave

Not a problem, neck it up, trim it to length, just don't put it in a 270 after that.

It'll work for now, As stated above it needs to be CLEARLY marked and quarantined. A 270 bullet would fall through, but the best bet is to acquire .30-06 brass. Cast boolit brass lasts a long, long time.

The main issue would be grabbing the wrong ammo some time by checking the headstamp.
Personally, I have way too many calibers laying around to risk it. I would guarantee that
I'd arrive at the range one day with a .270 rifle and a box of ammo with a .270 headstamp
and a .30 cal boolit in it !
You may be more careful than I am, it wouldn't be too hard.

About 7-8 years ago, I had a few old .270 Win cases sitting around I got somewhere. Since I don't have anything chambered in .270 Win, I figured I'd try sizing them up to .30-06.
The very first neck split wide open. I decided to leave the rest just like they were.
Your mileage may vary. If your cartridges are pretty new and haven't been work-hardened by reloading, you just might have a lot better luck. Annealing the case mouths will likely improve your batting average considerably.
However, .30-06 just might be the most popular high-power rifle cartridge of the last century. It shouldn't be hard to find some good fired cases somewhere around your neck of the woods.
I've done it, no issues. Trick is going slow. I expanded first to .284, then .300, then .308. Then trim and load.

I traded for some odd ball 06 rounds. They endded up being 270 on 06 cases.
I tore off thier tiny heads, ran them thru the sizing dies, and stuffed 30 cal slugs back in them, where they belong.

save your postage money on trades. Neck it up and have at it. It'll be fine.

since I do not own a 270 cal firearm and I once encountered 100 270 just fired cases at the rifle range I did resize them and use them in my 30-06. be sure to lube the inside of the neck before resizing and you will not have any problems. I use a q-tip and spray on some pam then run the q-tip inside of the neck. So far I haven't lost a case due to split necks.
