Got some today. Gonnagitsommore. Is dat a word?

Well, anyway, the short list is 40.0 with a 311285 (ACWW) did almost a one holer at fifty - Four is just about one hole and one less than a helaf inch away. Grandson is loading a few more as we speak for immediate testing with young [but much less experienced eyes]. Okay, he's done, we're on the way to the shootin' bench behind the barn. sundog

p.s. platform is my 03 sporter with weaver 4x scope bedded in a carbolite stock.

Just came back in. GS is a righty and shot lefty because my tractor was in the way of the shooting bench. He did the same as I did. The boolits we're loading are marked 2004 bbl warmers. Gonna hafta chrono this to see what it's doing, but I'm guessing 1900-2100. Hey, it's not only on paper, it's making small groups. The other plus is that there's almost NO trash in the bbl. sundog

p.s. GS just another batch load, so we're back to the shootin' bench.

Is there anyone else using this stuff?

I got to looking at the data sheet today, and if I had read fer nuf the other day I would have seen that 311284 is listed in '06. My load above is prolly a little slower than I indicated, but it do shoot good. sundog

...............So is it leaning toward 4831 or 4350? Or is it actually slower then 4831 or faster then 4350? Sure can't argue with your results so far! You say $8/lb so $64/8# jug, right?

I'd make a WAG that it is good old 860 powder or that burning speed anyway...

Corky,

I think you will find that is about 1600 fps. Should be about the same as my 44 grains of 4831 load.

Bass, you're prolly purdy close. Their data sheet shows 47.7 for 2023 and max of 53 for 2304. If I had read further earlier, I would have seen it. I'm gonna up the speed til the group goes south, back it off and chrono it. I'll post the results. I'm thinkin' real hard on a 12 or 13 twist bbl to replace the original 10 twist. Shame to change out a still good bbl though. Oh well, something else to play with.

No data for cast in .308. Where would you start with a 12 twist bbl? sundog

Scrounger:

I bought some DATA 85 by AA from Graf early this year. Same price. It is listed by AA to be Ramshot Hunter. On the burning rate chart from Reloadersnest.com it falls between IMR 4350 and 4831. Same as Data 86. It is a ball powder. Would there be a Surplus equivalent for this by your memory?

Corky,

There is an 8% difference between the 308 and 06. Multiply 40 by .08 = 3.2. So I would say 37 grains and come right on up with it.

Bass, right on. Just needed a verification before I did it. Thanks, sundog

GS and I shot some more of it yesterday after mil bolt match. It was windy, steady 15-20 gusty to 25+, straight into or quartering from left front (N by NE). Squirrelly. Match scores reflected conditions. Temp at match time was 47dF. Somehow I bested the field, but only a 286/300. It was a tough day. My load for my CMP Rem 03A3 with 2-groove RA 8-43 bbl, is 24.0/N120 and a RCBS 30-180-SP, no filler, Rem 9 1/2 primer, LCNM case.

Anyway, after the match we set up in the all wx shooting bld, with loading bench on back wall and mounted the dump, scale and press (my old RCBS Jr I had gotten at a garage sale in Colo Spgs about '72 and still doing duty). The shooting lane for the indoor benches is along side the berm seperating the rifle and pissola range, on the left side, but at about 65-70 yards the berm turns and it's open sky the rest of the way out to the target board. A virtual wind tunnel in conditions like yesterday. One group I shot earlier in the match was about 3/4 inch tall and 3 inches wide out on the wide ope range area! We ran up and down some powder weights and it seems like 44.0/Data 86 is a purdy good load in the 03 Sporter - 2 groove, 10 twist, original issue 7-44 RA bbl with 311284. One 4-shot group I shot was under 1 inch. GS shot a 10-shoot group that 8 were well under 2 inches. I shot another 5-shot group that strung out horizontal because of the wind conditions. Bbl was relatively clean when we finished.

Data on the Powder Valley site shows this boolit with 47.7 gr at about 2050 fps. As I have time I will run it up and see what happens. Did I mention it was windy? sundog

Sundog, 12 twist good for 200 grains and below. Might get by with with the 12 twist if the boolit is pointed beyond 200 grains. Check out the 308 barrel before contemplating further with that boolit. Keep velocities around 2100, even with the 308. ... felix
