When running boolits for rounds like 38 Special and 45 ACP through the lube sizer, how important is it to fill the groove around the entire circumference.

i.e. Do you worry about 20% or so of the grrove not being filled?

If the grooves are small(narrow/shallow) then missing 20% may cause leading. I've always filled the groove(s) to a least 95%.

If the lube spins off as soon as the bullet leaves the muzzle, there should be no affect on bullet flight.
If it stays on (at least for awhile) unevenly filled grooves can be expected to throw the bullet off balance.

Which situation is true for your gun?

To rephrase CM; with a soft lube, no; with a hard lube, yes.

I used to think not, but I have decided that it's best to fill the grooves. My hypothesis is that the lube in the groove prevents band collapse due to pressure/inertia actions. A rationalization, for sure.

If Greenhead (Cabezaverde) doesn't rephrase my post, he will just answer my ending question.
I expect he will say he is not sure whether his lube spins away, or rides downrange.

My reply to that is...if you're unsure, then you must assume the worst and take steps to prevent it.

In this case, that means filling the grooves full.
