I have searched this forum for some suggested loads for my 30-06 '03A3 using Lyman's 311299 and found quite a few, but not with any of my available powders. I have on hand H4895, Varget, BL-C(2), H4350, H4831, AA-2200, AA-2230-C, Unique and Green Dot.

I'm looking for a target load around 1600 fps for 100 yard use. Any suggestion?

Aha! Mike, I know something about this. My very best target loads are with 2 powders you don't list, N120 and 4227. No help there. But here is some help that will save you some time. Look for loads in the 1550-1650 fps range for hunert yard target loads. From what you list I would start with either 4895 or Varget, probably 4895 as it seems to be friendly to down loading to some degree. I don't have data in front of me [at work] but I'm thinking about 28 grains. Keep the boolit as fat as possible and neck size only the brass. If you can, seat the boolit out far enough to lightly engrave on loading, thus helping concentricity. I would shy away from 4350 and 4831 unless I was loading up heavier loads. I've tried 4350 with cast and don't like it. I've tried 4831 with cast and do like it, but you gotta get the speed up, so that sorta leaves it out for target loads. I definitely shy away from any of those ball powders mentioned unless I can get the pressure up to get good ignition, and now you're in the 2K plus velocity, not a good all day target load. Besides, the ball powders seem to work 'mo betta' with mag primers, and that is not necessarily conducive to what you want. Ball powders need pressure.

As an aside, I have been experimenting with 2230C in 308 with cast. It works, but other stuff works better.

For what you want, I still think powders in the 4227 to 4198 to 3031 range work best. One of my shooting partners swears by 2400. He also does very well. Another shooting partner uses H108 and does well. All these powders work really good with cast in the 165 to 200 range. Just gotta find the sweet spot for your gun.

I have been shooting military bolt matches monthly since about '97 or '98 and have placed 1, 2, or 3 in many of them. I've shot in the high 290s/300 and shot groups under 2 inches. I know what works FOR ME. YMMV. Hope this 'heps'. sundog

I agree with Sundog, I'd run say 27 to 30 grs of 4895 and see which is more accurate and stay with that load. You may want to use a dacron filler also. Don't pack that stuff in, make it fill the space between the top of the powder and the base of the bullet. Cutting it into the right rectangular sizes, by trial and error, works best.

Gotta go with Joe and Sundog...In my '03s 27 gr of H4895 witha 1 gr filler of dacron under the 311299 runs 1730 fps and shoots 1 1/2 MOA. It will shoot MOA out of my scoped 24" barreled bolt gun.

Great info guys!! It makes sense now, ie... "Look for loads in the 1550-1650 fps...". I reckon I was covered up with too much data
and was trying to make it complicated.

I appreciate your help, Joe, Sundog and Larry!

This is with 311284, which is slightly heavier and has more bearing surface. I think you can read the data. Note that this was 200 yards, not 100, and fired prone, but with a scope.

This load shot very well for me, ~ a minute for ten shots out to 300 yards.
