For 45ACP, which mold do you like between the Lee 228gr. round nose and the Lee 230gr. truncated cone? Why?
Thanks,
Bill

I tend to look at EVERY bullet mould as if I would want to use it on either game or self defense (in other words I place a rather high priority on PERFORMANCE).

Lee's truncated cone should feed as well as a round nose but be more effective at the terminal end.

In the past, I shot a goodly number of Hornady jacketed bullets at this configuration. They shot EXTREMELY well and fed perfectly in the 1911's.

Thanks Dale, been trying to get a mould but everyone is backordered or out of stock. Anyone have an extra, wc

Paper punching, either will do. The TC will make nicer holes. I have the 228RN & it's an accurate bullet, obviously feeds in anything.

I think the 228-1R is a little more accurate, in my guns, but I still like the 230 TC better. In fact, I've got a six cavity 228-1R, and will trade for a 230-TC if anybody wants too.

Thanks for the replies. The round nose has two lube grooves and the TC one. Does that have any significance?

I have never shot the RN boolit. Willbird fixed me up with a hundred or so of the TC design and I really liked that boolit. Both my 1911's fed and shot it very well. I was hot on obtaining this mold until I got mihas 200gr SWC in 6cav and the 200RF hollow point 2 cav. All I want to shoot right now.

I shoot Lyman 452374 rn and the same in hollow-point (factory "Devastator"), but for target work I would seriously try to get the Lee tumble-lube TC in 230 gr and try to make it work with the liquid Alox or Lar's X-lox, you can't beat the speed of 6-banger moulds and no sizing required (usually, depends on the gun). A friend cast a few up for me and I'm trolling for a mould now after shooting them.

I have a Lyman 230 grain RN with I one large lube groove than I've only shot 8 rounds thru with my 1911. I like it so far, and it seems to feed very nicely. This is the only mold I have so far for the 45, and down the road I may look towards the TC style. I'm thinking about bumping this boolit up 6 grains of unique and see what it does on paper. Ani't it fun casting, loading and shooting up this labor of love.

I don't know about accuracy, but I like the TC better than the RN. I have both. I just don't like the step on the round nose. I think the TC comes out of the mold easier.

I needed a .45 mould for a Randall .45 ACP and an ancient S&W revolver. I decided on Lee's 452-255 RNFN. It feeds in the auto-loader and cuts semi-wadcutter type holes. The S&W has a lot of issues that this boolit hasn't been able to correct.

I have both for my XD-45, the stepped shoulder on the RN hangs up in the XD. The truncated cone feeds like a dream -1200 rounds with no FTFs with the TC. They are equally accurate.
