an air gage is a tool they use to measure the bore. So they are telling you they checked the bore but that gives no indication of what they found. Manufactures will state something like air gaged to within .0002” tolerance for bench rest grade barrels.

Yes they are giving you a specific tolerance. They are saying that they have measured the barrel and it does not exceed +or-.00001 of the bore diameter. Shilen, Hart, Douglas and Anschutz air gauge their barrels to meet the demands from precision shooters.

The way it works is that a precision-ground plug is passed through the bore. The plug has a closely toleranced hole(s) that allows air to exit at a given rate of flow. The plug is also attached to a control unit that provides and measures this flow. Although an air gage is useful only on tightly toleranced parts (usually under .005), it is an extremely accurate and robust measuring system capable of registering in the millionths. We have a unit where I work that reads to .000010 and we use it for checking reamed bores with a maximum overall tolerance of .0003.
