Dreaming about the next rifle. Is a bolt-action 308win or a 243win with a 20” barrel capable of M.O.A. accuracy out to 300 yards?

I'm not certain I understand the question. M.O.A. = Minute Of Angle which I understood to be about 1 inch in 100 yards. If it'll do MOA at 100 (1 inch) it should do MOA at 200 (2 inches) or 300 (3 inches) yards. Certainly projectile drop has to be factored in, but I see no difference otherwise.

Yes my question is can a 243 or 308 w/ a 20" barrel shoot a 3" group at 300yards?

It's been done. Certainly depends on the rifle and ammo. I assume you're talking J-word bullets.

Yes “J” word bullets and meticulous handloading.

Heard good things about the new Savage F class rifle, Last years Guns?

Check it out

there are 10" barreled handguns that shoot MOA out past 500 yards. A 20" 243 or 308 built right with the right loads should have no problem shooting MOA to 300 yards.

Thank you 44mag1, that is what I needed to hear.

I'm going to say why not. If the rest of the rifle is up to it, a 20" barrel isn't going to be the deciding factor. My '03A3 lost the last 2" of it's still original barrel (now 22") in a nicely done sporter job and will hold 1 1/8" at 300 yrds. Not to mention that it has some pitting to an otherwise nice looking bore. IMO the length has more to do with velocity than it does with accuracy until you reach out past 500 yards. Then you're just talking about a hole 'nother animal all together.

Your answer is yes , for the 308 , I have never tried to make a 243 shoot to this spec.

If you are buying new, there are several out there, If having one custom built , it should be a no brainer. As stated above, Have heard a lot of good things about the new Savage.

I had Mr.P.O. Ackley build a rifle for me before he retired and turned his business over to his son in Law, . I wanted 25" bbl , he said I was nuts , a 20" would shoot better and do anything I wanted , so we compromised and I still have a 338 winnie on a Sako action that will burn a hole in the paper with the right loads.

The shorter bbl gives up little and is easier to handle in the woods.

Out of the box or straight from the gun show - who knows.

I do know several people that say if your .308 won't do MOA, take it to the hospital or just get rid of it. My kid's Ruger M77 in .308 will do sub-MOA (out past 300 yards) if the shooter does his part.

I know a couple that bring back deer and elk back from Colorado each year - he the elk with his Sako 7MM mag --- her the mule deer with her Remington 788 .243.

In both cases a "short range" shot is usually around 300 yards.

They are both (both rifles) capable of sub-MOA shots.

What does the length of the barrel have to do with it? If the barrel is good quality, the bedding is right and the load is good it will shoot!

I've had a Savage 110 .243 for many years. I haven't shot it beyond 200 yds, but it is a MOA shooter at that range. I see no reason to believe that would not hold true at 300. That is with hand loaded ammo.

Benchrest guns typically have the shortest barrel they can get away with. The metal that would have gone into 26" of length goes into a really fat barrel about 19" (or so) long for maximum stiffness and minimum "barrel whip". They go well under M.O.A.

I've got an early production M700 with a 22" "sporter weight" barrel...action glass bedded and barrel free-floated...that will hold MOA or better out to 300M if I do my part. Of course, that's using handloaded JB's in carefully prepared cases. Outside of losing a bit of MV, don't see any reason why a good 20-incher shouldn't do the same.

My Savage 243 will take out Prapie Dogs consistently at 450 yds. and it is box stock.
