I have used some of these links in the past, but thank you for posting a much larger list than I have found on my own. I reload and cast to save money to enjoy shooting and paying for targets just goes against that!

These targets are hosted here at Cast Boolits on the server.

Notes:

1. All are setup to print on 11" x 17" USA Ledger Paper. The file is a zip file that contains over 20 targets. Click the link to download the zip file.
2. All are gridded to 1" or less squares
3. Some are pistol, some are rifle. Rifle targets size at MOA out to 600 yards (6")
4. There are targets for open sights, scopes, or designs that favor V notch or peep sights.

A really good cheap way to store a large batch of these is to use a medium FedEx box and put a piece of velcro on the end flap to keep it closed. Cheap, cheap, cheap. More money for ammo.:-D

Can you think of anything cheap that I can use with a shotgun? I thought about rice cakes, but they cost too much. Stale beer is fun, butt costs too much also. I thought about baggies of flour.

Use your empty cans... If you drink Pop or Beer in cans, fill them with water, then hang them from the pull tab on a string from a nail on on your target back stop...

Don't forget to return them after your done for your $.05 deposit...

Word of advice? DON'T SHOOT GLASS CONTAINERS! Unless you intend to clean the broken glass... I can think of no better way to tick off a land owner than to leave a shot up mess behind.

Let's see. I take my $500.00 -$2,000 revolver to the range with my $40.00 a box ammo (scratch that, we are bullet casters here) and often pay more to print targets in ink costs than buying them from the range at a nickle to a dime a piece? I just wanted to get the economics straight in my mind. Oh, and the print paper we use makes a TERRIBLE target, not nearly so good as real Tagboard that they make targets from to make nice holes.

I DO like some of the novelty targets but for my normal shooting I prefer tagboard targets. My local club keeps a large supply of targets for the various shooting disciplines on hand for members and their guests.

However, there is a way to economize that I have used in the past. Our small bore target frames for registered matches require target backers (to eliminate crossfires and make sure the correct number of shots are fired). These are blank paper but made of the same tagboard that targets are made from. I have taken them, and using a rubber stamp put a large number of bench rest targets on that one sheet. It allows LOTS of shots from a bench gun and it's great to practice with. Not only is it inexpensive, you can have a lot of targets on one sheet and don't have to change targets near as much. Now, THAT, I'll go along with.

These comments are NOT meant to "Poo-Poo" the idea of printing your own but you do need to factor actual costs (printer ink is not free and targets typcially use a LOT) and the paper is not very good for the purpose.

i dont see what the big deal is about target everone i seen posted had a bullseye and a nice group off to the side nothing in the center. I go to the range and shoot the targets outhers have left behind most dont have holes in the center or they us a smaller cal. Heck yea iam a cheap skate thats why I reload. But a warning to all turning a condom inside out to use it again dont work now I got two boys that were not planned lol.

Interesting... I print my targets on my black and white laser printer...

When I print targets... I'll print no more than five.

However when I know I'm going to want a lot of them, for example the good old bull's eye targets, I print one, then take it to work and run off 50 of them. for free, (to me anyway!) :redneck:

If I had to go to Kinko's...? I'd run off 100 at a time...

Just my $.02 worth, fwiw...

I must be really cheap.
I'll take the junk mail letters, use a 3/4" washer. Fill in the center with a red marker and trace around the outside. Since we can have only 1 target (paper) on the backer. I can have 6 targets to shoot at. Save a few trips down range to change out targets.

10 years a go I had to stay at the training range for 3 hours and watch my instructors guns and targets. For 3 hours no one came,so I shot . Ammo was $5 for 50 rounds and targets were .40.I shot $20 of 357 and $30 of 45acp. targets were to much to pay so I started to shoot flies. just put some ketchup on the backstop and wait,a very fun way to kill time.

Here are some more ideas for cheap targets. I bought some colored paper and post-it-notes at Walmart. The flouresent paper has 5 different colors and the black is ...just black. The paper packs were $3.50 each. 50 pieces for black (heavy paper) and 100 (20 each color) pieces for the colored. I can't remember what the post-it-notes cost. The black pens cost $1.50 for 2 and they are for making bullseyes on the colored paper.

http://pic90.picturetrail.com/VOL2370/12829840/22827959/380047002.jpg

Here is some different targets. The one on the left is just plain white paper. My friends liked shooting at the black targets with their handguns. black works goo for close shots, and the flouresent colors work good for longer shots. Neither works good for sighting in. For sighting-in, some of the printer targets listed in the first post works better, especially the ones with the 1 inch square grids. The cardboard piece with a hole in the center is for drawing the bullseye. I used glue sticks to help hold the post-it-notes to the paper.

I print mine on heavy computer paper that i obtained when the hospitial i worked for changed printers. The paper is thicker than greeting card paper. I obtained it(was trashed) in 1993 Still have alot left( ok i tend to hoard stuff) I use my printer .I refill the ink with refill kits( much cheaper than buying manufactors ink) There are many great sites for free targets. The variety is endless Rick

As a court reporter, I buy cartridges for my laser printer in railroad car lots. I can print 3,000 to 3,500 pages for $70 (lawyers use up a LOT of ink). I find the black and white targets most useful. With a good piece of cardboard for backing, they serve me well.
I would not want to print the color ones, as I only have a small inkjet for color. Nothing needed in color in my job. (A good reporter has need of neither color nor imagination).
BTW, at one time someone made a rubber stamp that would print a standard 25' slow fire bullseye. Is that still available?

I think I just entered targets in the search window and picked a site from there. Chose 2 targets we liked and hit print. Copied a few hundred of each. Since the range will allow 1 piece of paper on the target backer, and we have to share a lane sometimes. I taped 2 onto an 8 1/2 X 14 leger sheet and copied a few hundred of them too. But we add a bit more. We add 6 of the Birchwood Casey Shoot-N-C 3" stick-ons. That saves us a few trips down range to change targets.

I usually get my targets done on 8.5x11 paper at a COSTCO business center, seems like last ones were just a couple cents each. I use them on target frames that have a backing so they hold up well until they get wet. Shamefully (somewhat) I shoot my cast bullet loads at 25 yards so most loads stay on the paper. Sometimes I'll use a newspaper page as bigger backer to then use if to adjust rear sight to put it on the 8x11 target,
Six years ago I bought a refurbished Samsung 1710 BXW laser printer for about $90 delivered as well as four refill bottlers of toner for anoither $60, a couple months ago I got a new toner cartridge good for 3000 pages for $31 delivered. I could use that to print out targets for a couple cents each total...haven't done in yet.

Here's a variation of a target that I got, first from this thread, I think...

I altered it slightly... I think that with the cross hairs and the wee bullseye it'll make it a bit easier to 'level' your scope, and center the reticle at 100 yds plus...

JIMinPHX didn't you post this target, first...?

I spent several weeks hunting down all of the sights posted and printed off one of each of the good ones and made a master file package . I modified many of them by adding load data blocks or vertical and horizontal crosshair indexing lines and all kinds of other stuff. I also found that by using some colored paper that was more of a pastel rather than flourescent color the contrast was greatly improved and target definition was much much better. Now when I want copies I go to Office Max I can get a couple hundred copies ran off in a few minutes at about $.08 apiece and some of those targets use "ALOT" of ink for each one. My lexmark can only do maybe 4 dozen or so of these heavy black block type or the Palma long range targets before they start to fade and a $30.00 cartridge is done for. By trying different targets at a few cents apiece I have found certain ones to be better suited than others for specific tasks such as for sighting in,,, scoped rifle and iron sighted rifle,,, shooting at different ranges,,, load developement,,, pistol shooting ,,, and some just plain old targets for having fun . Some of those fun targets have helped me get some of my old stick in the mud buddies out shooting more . Cetrain ones have scoring formats on them and we have a friendly little competition round we will shoot that usually has some form of small wager built into it such as who buys lunch or "livations"

I work as an IT guy (computers), and before a printer goes to the boneyard, I hook it up to my computer and run the ink dry, using scrap paper. I ran that one HP1120 for weeks before i used up all the blue ink.

I designed my own targets on Microsoft word, mainly to get a 1" grid. I will try to post some pictures, and will share them if anyone is interested.

no34570,

Any preferences as far as 1" grid or ½" grid?

Size of bullseye?

Color or Black & White?

I can do 11"x17" paper size (or 8½"x14") as well. I hope to get a picture up tomorrow.

Okay, after going from "Plan A" on through the alpahabet, I finally had to use Microsoft Image Writer to get pictures of the Microsoft Word documents. Unfortunately, that seems to allow only for a black and white picture of the targets. Instead of the red and yellow bullseyes, they show gray:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g184/artsmom/HalfInchGrid.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g184/artsmom/Grid.jpg

Anyhow, once you have a copy of them, you can fix and color the bullseye on a target any way you want, if you have Microsoft Word on your computer.

Sorry for the delay.

PM me if you would like me to send you a copy of these targets as a Word attachment. I also have an 11" by 17" that features features two bullseyes, evenly spaced.

As an alternative to printing one's targets, I also buy round labels to use as bullseyes.

This allows me to use recycled paper that wouldn't work in printers and use 3-4" bullseyes that would drain an inkjet cartridge dry in no time, or put a dent into a colored laserjet toner cartridge. They also seem to be brighter than I have been able to reproduce on a printer.

Here are two places that sell neon round labels:

I think he means he lays either a circle or doughnut shaped piece of card on the blank side of a piece of wallpaper, then spray paints over the top of both. Once the piece of cardboard is removed, it leaves either a white bullseye or ring.

I have downloaded a bunch of these some time ago as a bitmap and then taken off the logos names and other **** on the target that I don't need to waste ink on. I also made a small information box listing just the stuff I need. Then copy and paste as I need it. I even changed some of I need. They are pretty cheap to make. also I bought a small cheapest on sale printer that I can find so I dont use the high dollar ink in photo printers. sometimes you can get a new cheap printer cheaper then the ink. I got one one time on sale for 34.99 with a 10.00 rebate making it 25.00.

Not actually on topic about printing targets:

The old green bar printing paper makes great target paper, but don't use the all white back side of it. Draw or stick your bullseye on the contrasting green or white side.

The first reason for doing so is that the green stripes tend to cut down on the glare that an all white background will give on a sunny day. That glare tends to cause eye fatigue and even headaches when shooting for a longer amount of time. The bland green will still contrast well with a bright colored or dark bullseye.

The second reason is that those alternating stripes are exactly 1/2" wide, which is like having a grid or built in ruler to help measure groups and make adjustments to sights or scope.

Lastly, that paper measures 11" x 14", and will catch a few more holes than 8 1/2" by 11", which is mostly helpful when doing an initial sight in of scope or sights.

This morning my printer sez,
"Carriage Jam. Clear carriage jam."

So it might become a target from my printer.

It's about to become toast, since it already has the jam....

One perk I find in printing targets on my printer is, the same target
(after I have shot it) can be easily scanned and pased on as e-mail.

A lot of good targets here:

http://www.accurateshooter.com/shooting-skills/targets/

The cost of printer paper, ink, and etc. being high as it is, suggest you download the file you want to a thumb drive and the next time you are near a Kinko's or FedEx Office place have them print you a supply. The only thing cheaper would be to use the copy machine at work :-).

Here are a couple of 11x17 targets i made for the coyote special scope. I have used the 100. I haven't used the 200 yd yet, i got busy with another rifle and haven't gotten to the range with the .22-250
I'm lucky enough to have an 11x17 printer at work

Can you think of anything cheap that I can use with a shotgun? I thought about rice cakes, but they cost too much. Stale beer is fun, butt costs too much also. I thought about baggies of flour.

This reminds me of a small trap club that my friends & I used to go to while in high school in the 60's. We would fill clay birds with all kinds of things and glue a piece of paper on the back to hold it in. When the glue was dry, we trimmed off the excess paper with scissors and gave them to the guy in the pit to throw out randomly. My favorites were dove feathers that we saved from dove hunts, flour, the old IBM card punch-outs (chads?), 2 or 3 small paper airplanes, and the all time favorite, a plastic army man with a small plastic parachute that would deploy when the bird was hit. Great fun!

Dodgem250,

I am a big fan of multiple bullseyes on a single sheet of paper. It saves time, saves steps, and doesn't hold up the firing line in some range setups.

I print ONE good copy then take that copy to Office Depot and have them copy the target on heavy card stock. It costs a few bucks but it saves on my printer cartridge use.

I have my own range, so I am not taking funds from any club. (Mine doesnt sell targets) They are cheap compared with store bought, and I can print lots of them on one sheet which saves me trucking out to the backer as often. Thanks for the variety, I have seen most , but new are always good to break the boredom of the same ones all the time.

I've been making my own printer paper targets since the mid 80's.
You can do a lot of shooting before you have to change them.
I had a stand with clips to hold 2 side by each... but alas
it was stolen at the range, (no integrity in this world left at all )
(maybe 10% of us...and I'll bet that's being a bit optimistic)
it was collapsible and very portable- I'll have to make a new one.
one of these days.
I named it Target All:roll: (11x17) This incarnation is from '92.

When shooting my shotguns very often I'll use the shell from the previous shot as a pigeon. Those who reload shotgun shells might not like this idea :-p (I've been wanting to get shotgun reloading goodies...apparently the Lee setup is like 50$...Wonder if it's any good?)

A lot of ranges will offer targets...Ones I've been to, typically 10-25 cents a pop. Very often I just use a sheet of paper with a large sharpie dot or a circle drawn on it.

Curious about something: I saw at some range somewhere a guy next to me with his target being a printout of Obama. All personal feelings or attitudes aside from discussion (please), isn't this illegal? I ask because I heard somewhere even saying/joking that one is going to kill any president could land you in some hot water... Anyone?

I'll add- It would concern me a bit if I saw someone at a range shooting at a target of anyone (non celebrity/public figure). Not to the point where I'd call the cops, but...Eek.

I'm not certain of the legality of Obama targets, but it's unwise at best. I wouldn't want the attention, even if it were perfectly legal.

I found a roll of butcher paper 24 in wide and the roll is over 3foot across at an estate sale. It cost a Pepsi to have someone help carry to the truck. I use Elmer's glue to past them on cardboard targets that get thrown away at the range. Yes I am cheap!

Try going to a local news paper office and ask about the ends of the rolls off their presses. The one near me sells them for a dollar a roll. This and some of the little color dots you can buy at the office supply make great targets. The roll paper also gives you a nice fresh backer to see where your shots are landing.

Cheap as well as creative and retired. Between junk mail and thrift store I get enough target material for an army post. Elmers glue , looseleaf, colored paper. Have never in 20 years bought one . Wife knows what week I'm going to the range by my sitting at the table with paper , scissors and glue.

I haven't checked the links all out, yet, but I'm hoping that one or two are targets that work with thermal label printers (eltron Zebra type).

Labels are 4x6 ( the standard opens I use are anyhow), and you can get ups ones free ( or could last I checked). They don't require ink, and you can stick them on an existing target, etc.

Ambrose
12-21-2014, 12:46 PM
I dug through the links and found a few that seemed to print well and easily with a 4x6 label printer, so here were my results...

http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10142.pdf , http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10124.pdf , and http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10138.pdf printed very well.

http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10098.pdf printed well, too, but is probably not really worth the bother. It is just a 2" black Circle on 4x6 label stock, and you can get that effect more cheaply and easily with stick on colored dot labels.

http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10090.pdf also prints well, but the bullseye/ center dot is only 1/2 an inch, which makes it pretty limited in application, I believe.

Just a suggestion for those frugal persons such as myself. I use anything that is 8 1/2 X 11 and blank. Scotch tape it to plastic election signs, and mark 5 dots with black marker. That allows me to see where I am hitting. Too big of a bullseye (black section) and I cannot see where the bullet is going through the yard sign. I usually mount 2 sheets on the yard sighn and that way I have 10 targets to shoot at. When my grandsons go with the targets get pretty creative. We sure do have a lot of fun.

All kinds of good ideas, but here is what I do. For sighting in a new rifle, I use white butcher paper with a 1" targ dot. For group analysis, I use a number of different printable targets, but I take what I print off at home to Kinkos and print them off on yellow or tan card stock 8 1/2x11". Usually have four bulls per sheet, which allows for 20 shots (4 ea 5 shot groups). card stock is stiff enough to provide good clean holes without ripping. Targets that I want to keep are 3 hole punched, and put in a note book.

Construction program called "Blue Line?" IIRC,made a ton of patterns, bought the 110 lb paper card stock, printed them on company copy machine, cost only for paper to print on.$17 for 250 pages if I remember the cost correctly. Now have about 1000 targets, thanks to my boss, (also a shooter) he bought the paper! Done for a while for targets. Good shooting to all.

If I may:
If you have an office in your workplace that handles projects and has old drawings of specs and construction drawings you can usually get them for free to "recycle" at the range of course.
Our PM shop at work will recycle drawings that have no proprietary info on them, I will take a couple of rolls and have upwards of two hundred new target sheets. a thick sharpie and I can see where my boolits are landing when sighting in.

I've used a strip of exam table paper with colored dots from Wal-Mart's office supply section as aiming points. Hard to see those with open sights, though. Paper plates with a dot in the middle work.

Thumbs up with the paper plate. I am a woodworker and have about a thousand worn out sanding discs laying around. I screw them to a board and at a hundred yrds. you can hear the unique sound of hot lead thru sandpaper. Who needs a spotting scope..
