What is this gun?

Anyone got an idea of what this is? Belongs to a friend up the valley, and I'm not up on this particular oddity.

Its a Snider varriant.

Actually a French version of the British Snider.

Yes, a "French" Snyder conversion. Actually many of these were converted in Belgium as inexpensive shotguns. They were imported into the US around the turn of the century under the name "Zulu." Some were 12 gauge most were 14 or 16 gauge, occasionally 24 gauge as well. They were built from French, Dutch, Belgian, and other obsolete European smooth bore muskets. Often the breech block is cast of bronze.
