I am somewhat of a Enfield collector and I needed a headspace gauge that i could test a prospective buy with that would give me a quick ball park. I turned a disk that measures .068 on the rim with a projection that brings it up to .074 when I reverse the disk. This lets me do a quick check. I hold back the extractor and slip the disk under and slowly close the bolt. If it closes on the rim only side OK then I turn it around and try again if the bolt still closes I figure the headspace will need work. This is not a super accurate professional tool, for that I have a gauge that uses a screw in the base and I can measure the actual headspace to .001. This sure helps when you need to decide on a rifle and isn't a bad bargaining tool either. The same tool will work on a 30-40, but I have yet to find a Krag with bad headspace.
