I am looking for a Gallery Load for my 45 Colt Low Wall. I am pretty well laid up for a while, but I can get out on the porch. So I was looking for a good gallery load for my 45 Colt Low Wall. I wanted to find a good gallery Load for deer season, so I could shoot somer grouse while deer hunting. For now I just want a good silent load for shooting at the gong from my porch.

Any suggestions?? What type bullets-I was thinking about round balls, but my mind is wide open. Thanks, Tom.

I make light loads for plinking with round balls. I use 2.5 gr of red dot and a 451 RB lubed with lee liquid allox. I seat the ball about halfway into the case and crimp it in place. Makes a mild report and is accurate at 15 yards from my Ruger black hawk. It makes even less noise in my Puma carbine. I load the same load with 28 gr of black powder and a couple of card wads and a wonder wad under the ball. This works well in my R&D conversion cylinder in my 1858 Remington clone.

I use Saeco #955, 260-grain cowboy bullet, cast 1:30 tin-lead, as-cast and unsized at. 455", with 5 grains of Bullseye, for 878 fps. from the 20" barrel, or 685 fps. from my Colt New Service. I get 2-1/2" to 3" group at 50 yards. Not my most accurate load, but low report and good "whack!" on the gong.

Lee 160gr RNFP over 5grs of bullseye, about 900fps in my blackhawk 4.5". Easy on lead, easy on powder, easy on shooter. I'd like to get some of those 155gr button nosed wadcutters or a mold one day, too many projects though.

On the subject of button-nose wadcutters. I just now got back from the range and shot my first batch of #452389 185 gr. in .45 Colt. Felix recommended a light load (which I loaded but did not shoot this time), but another member recommended 20 gr. 4227 (my favorite powder in 45 Colt). The load I started off with was 18.6 gr IMR 4227 which repeatedly cut one ragged hole at 15 yards offhand.

I crimped over the front band, lubed with carnauba red. I was THRILLED with the results and am looking forward to trying Felix's light load next week. Good times!!

Sad tale here of my only attempt with a round ball mold and learning how inclusions cause low velocity rounds (and round balls) to diverge remarkably from from POA/POI.

It is all about the learning curve and now I weigh my target boolits for consistency.

I use 200 gr. RNFP with 3.5 gr. Unique or 3 gr. Bullseye. Nice light recoil and just be careful if you use in longer barrels and make sure bullets exit as you test up. I actually have to use 10 gr. in my 32" barrels and can get to 6 gr. in my 20" barrel, but pistol uses 3.5 gr. unique. 8)

.

I use .457" RB's over an ox-Yoke wad & 25gr FFFg Holy Black for Gallery loads in my ROA with .45 Colt conversion cylinder.
