Can a bullet that is designed to use a gas check be used without one?

Will the step increase the chance of gas cutting?

I would like to use a .44 g/c mold in a .44 special.

I have used the Lee tumble lube mold that doesn't use the gas check, and had no problems with fouling or gas cutting in a 44 spl or light load 44 mag.

Short answer is yes.

Long answer is yes, sometimes. Accuracy usually suffers (not always) and leading can occur. Both problems are usually caused because the base of the boolit does not expand properly.

Depends on the gun and load. Look back through the posts here or use the search function. This question gets asked about 1-2 times a week.

I've been pondering that question too, as the flat base SWC mold I want for my 44 just has not been available, but the GC version is. I shoot low velocity, somewhat hard boolits and the base may not expand enough for a good seal. Thought about cutting the base of the GC mold out, but I lack the machinery to do it right.

My Mountain mold does fine with out the gc check- I did not clock it but velocity was --i think 1100-1200 -- accuracy was fine- your mileage may vary -- best answer is try it
