View Full Version : Beeswax substitution to harden lube?

I mixed up some of Darr's lube and I feel it is fine for lower velocity pistols and it makes my hands soft [smilie=1:. I would like to harden the lube up a little because it is kind of messy when loading.

I should add that I am finding beeswax kind of hard to come by, or if you have a secret source let me know so I can pick some up.

You can find bees wax in craft stores otherwise I'd try parafine like trey45 said.

Look up www.glorybee.com, then go to bee and honey related stuff on their site.

Parafin will harden lube but is not a substitute for beeswax. Use some parafin if you wish, but you still need the beeswax.

Here's a good source for all things lube related. http://www.thesage.com/catalog/index.html

What qualities will beeswax give the lube?

beeswax is the carrier of the lube it has little pores in it.
if you have some scented candles around they will firm up lbe too you need a plasticizer for best results though and soy wax has the pores too just smaller than the b-wax does.

What is soy wax found in or what is it used for? I just made a new mix with 3 oz of lube where I upped Darrs lube from 1:1 to 2:1 paraffin to vaseline. If it firms up enough to satisfy me then I will lube some bullets with it to see how well it stays in the lube grooves.

Beeswax is an effective lubricant as well as a carrier for other ingredients.

Sturgell, If you go to craft stores or candle shops you will pay as much as $10 a pound for beeswax. Randyrat as has been posted is a good source. He 's a forum member and honest. I've bought wax from him on several occasions. He has a 3 lb package that he sells. If you only want to try some beeswax then Hobby Lobby has it in the candle section.

I am in Stillwater. I lubed some bullets last night with my hardened Darr's lube and it seems to be a lot more firm. I will shoot some boolits lubed with them and see how well it works.

I use church candle stumps as they are labeled 51% beeswax..they throw them away so I recycle them for soime holy bullet lube. I blend with Lithium grease--about 50/50.

Me and Afrance use Dar exclusively and found the same results. So we shaved a little bit of irvoy soap into the lube (real fine flakes) and found that helped alot.

I don’t know if this would work, I have never tried it. But trapping wax has a Bees wax base, but there is something in it to harden it. If it works its cheap enough at less than $3.00 a pound..

Church candle stubs! That's an awesome idea!
