I've got a old Lyman 9mm 115gr Truncated Cone double cavity mold that I bought off E-bay several years ago. One cavity is just fine but the other looks like someone used a drill and cut out the lube grooves to the cavity. It produces what looks like the end of a silver Crayola Crayon when I cast anything out of that cavity. It looks like someone made it into a Paper Patch mold for a 357.

My question to the group is this. Is there anyone or any company that could recut that buggered cavity out to resemble either a Lyman 358429 (170gr SWC) or 358477 (150gr SWC)?

Just trying to get a mold back up and running at full speed versus half :)

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Probably not enough material left to recut to a 35 caliber boolit. The outside diameter may be .356" if the drill did not enlarge it. This leaves .002" for lube grooves if you take it out to .356"

This is just off the top of my head. Some of the machinists will probably be able to explain it better.

Recutting would probably be more expensive than buying a new mould.

Well, I guess I could recut it to 452. I guess it means I'll have to pick up a 45 to go with it...

You can also have it recut for 44

It might cost more to fix than replace.

Bruce,

If you have a 41, you could have the buggered up cavity cut for a 41 Mag boolit. the lube groves for a 41 are about .358" in diameter. Just a thought.

NEI, when Walt ran it, used to offer recutting services.

He was adament about the not being resposible for the quality of the mold sent him to re cut and basically said it was your risk.

However if you used a cherry he had in stock the price was not unreasonable.

I am not sure if the kids are still running NEI or not. A google search and phone call would be my next move.

NEI. That's an option I'm going to explore. I'd like to get it running again at full speed.

Consider it a single cavity mould and save your money for something new ! By the time you ship it back and forth plus recutting charges you can buy a new mould.

The last recent custom mould experience from NEI will be my VERY last ! :(
