I'm thinking about trying some of this surplus powder and was wondering what you guys liked for the old ACP also any favorite loads for a 230 gr LRN? I want to come close to duplicating hardball ballistics.

Don't think there are any surplus powders for the 45 ACP but there are bulk powdeers that will work. See www.Patsreloading.com

I'm currently using surplus 231. Unfortunately it's no longer available. I bought an 8 pound jug of surplus #7 one time. Shot great as long as you're willing to trickle every load as it won't meter at all. The chinese #2 equivalent is probably your best bet these days.
I've also used a good bit of Titegroup which we bought from Grafs in a local group buy for $98/8 lb jug, free shipping and hazmat. There's a very fast lot of WC820 out there which works in the .45 acp for hardball loads, but at a 10 grain charge weight for the WC820, the Titegroup works out to cost less.

BD---I think if you found someone with a Belding&Mull powder measure, they could throw that #7 powder. I have yet to find a powder that they dont meter.

Carpetman, what a good idea. I do in fact have a B&M measure set up for my .223 Varget load. I'll give it a try. BD

BD---You have Belding & Mull set up for a specific load????????? Does this mean you have a "fixed" charging tube made up? The charging tubes are adjustable so switching one weight to another not too hard. Anyways please give it a try with that powder and let me know how it works out.

C-Man, It's not a "fixed" tube. Just a dedicated powder measure for my .223 highpower loads. The belding and Mull will measure Varget as accurately as my 505 scale can read. As I have to drop tube the load to seat the 77 grainers to mag length, using the B&M really speeds things up compared to trickling them. I keep an old Pro-Jector set up for .45 acp, and the B&M and a Lyman turret plate set up for .223. I load 50 to a hundred each of other calibers each year, but thousands of those two. The experiment with the surplus #7 occurred a few years before I got the B&M, and I guess it just never occurred to me to try the two together as I load all my .45 acp on the progressive press. BD

BD---I have read many times that various powders would not meter good. The only measure I've ever used is B&M and I've not found a powder it doesn't meter about like what you described.

I use #105 from Bartletts. It works great in the 45 ACP.
