Anyone have a really accurate load out of an 1895 with the Gould bullet (330gr HP mold from Lyman). I have got some feedback on other boards but need some more input. I know the primary issues in a Marlin are freebore and bullet diameter and that filling the gap between powder and bullet bases comes into play on light loads but I am just trying to get an idea of what powders and loads to put on the short list of things to try.

Thanks!
Mark

mleeber,

Try this: 60 gr Swiss 1.5 F/.060 veggie wad/Lyman Gould 25:1(lead/tin).459/BP lube(your choice)
Shoots great in 1895 CB.

I use 47.0 gr. of IMR-4895 for the gould bullet in my Marlin guide gun.

Drop tube 70 grains Goex FF, felt weatherstripping wad over powder, pan lube bullet with 50/50 bees wax/canola or peanut as available with some lanolin added to suit. (Lanolin makes it stick to bullet better.) Seat to crimp groeve and crimp enough to remove case bell and smooth up edge of case mouth.

Load is accurate from a CB Marlin and dramatic from a ported guide gun.

Trail Boss makes an awesome plinking load with everything I've tried in a 45-70. The magic number I use is 70% of loaded case capacity(the space left in the case after seating the boolit). But I've had good results from 50%-90% of loaded case capacity. NEVER compress Trail Boss.

Hodgdon has data online to start with.

If you get a chance, read "Forty Years with the .45-70". He loved the Gould moulds and has real good advice.

I also use IMR -4895 with a wax gas check.
I find that the gas check does make the groups
better.:lovebooli

Do you have any unburned powder remaining in the barrel from that load? What is the boolit's BHN? Do you use some kind of a wad?

Thanks,
MJ

Marlin Junky,
I dont have much unburned powder, it does not affect accuracy as I tear one ragged hole at 100 yds. I dont use any kind of wad. I use ww droped in water, dont know BHN. I want to do a test on them to see if they fragment on inpact but have not had time. I only got this mould last month. I use nra 50-50 lube on them.
I think if you keep it between 1300 and 1500 fps it will be a real good load for any thing you could get your self into and not kick you brains out.:drinks:
