I am being over run by Wood Chucks and Coyotes in the back yard. So.. I have been plinking at them with the .22 Henry. They are just a tad out of range and all I have done is scared them a bit.

Was thinking of going to a .17HMR and just came across this in Cabelas. Too pricey for my blood but kinda neat allthe same.

I may just end up getting a .223 Bolt action or download some 30-06 paper patch. Any good sub cal-paper patch recipies?

Any of you guys have one of these .17HMR's? they want $4,999 for it. YEOW!

I have a Savage .17 HMR varmint model with an accu trigger that sells for around $200. It shoots into about 1/2" at 50 yds all the time. The groups at 100 yds (light wind) were sub MOA. I would highly recommend it for your problem.

For coyotes I'd stick with a 22 Mag at least.

17 HMR is a super varmit caliber. The light bullet looses whoop-a$$ over longer distances. If your shots are close, it works. .223 is a sure performer. A 150 gr boolit out of your .30-06 ahead of 10 gr of Unique would be just right and is amazingly accurate. The boolit weight, cast from soft lead, would be very hard to beat.

My mate in Idaho is using a Savage combination for coyotes and a 20g slug! I think he is under gunned..............hehehe.

The 17 is for nice weather shooting. Light wind will move bullet 1in or more, forget it in rain
