HI guys--
I was wondering if anyone here has tried 'Beagling' the Lyman 311291 mold with any luck to make a boollit for either the Mosin Nagant or Enfield rifles?

I'm just getting into the casting biz and was thinking on trading this mold for a 314299. This is a SC and have a DC I can use for my 308s.

Any help would be appreciated. :-P

Yap I sure have and it works. You need to slug the throat and barrel to get true size then beagle for that size or a thou or 3 over then size the beagled boolit.
Also you will need to flair the gas check as it will not fit the oversize shank of the bealged boolit.

Keep that SC311291 send to buckshot(or send it to one of the other board members that can do it) for a hollow point pin install.

Thanks. I thought about that HP pin, which sounds like a great idea. If I practice enough, I could probably make the pin myself in my Dad's machine shop.
I just picked up some nice lead to slug with, but will have to start a 'book of slugs' as my Mosin and Enfield collection has grown.

PS: Can you guide me to where it talks about slugging the throat, I never did that.

Click on the Castpic link at the bottom of the page then pick Articals by Members, look for "slugging a barrel"

I use a ¼ inch brass rod instead of steel for calibers of 6.5 thru the 8MM.

The easyist way I have found to slug the throat is to fill a fired case from the gun to be slugged with hot lead.

Oil the bore and throat and insert the lead filled case into chamber and close the bolt, oil whatever you are using to slug the barrel and drive it all the way down to the throat when you feel it stop against the lead filled case continue to drive the slug until if feels solid and will not drive anymore, now remove the lead case and drive the slug out into the chamber, you now have a true picture of the throat and free bore(the area just ahead of the case mouth).

Beagling just looks too easy.

It is easy, but it works. John will be remembered by the cast fraternity for ages because it works.

What diameter are you looking for in your 311291? I've had several old 311291's ideal and lyman that cast upwards of .314-5, and I know from reading others comments on this design this is the norm for older ones. I might even have a old Ideal SC still that casts around 314 IIRC if you are interested.

If he's not interested I certainly am.

Most of the time I believe it refers to Single Cavity, as in mold.

I have a 314299, but it drops .313 boolits. My M44's (and my 91/30's) groove diameter is .313 to .3135. No go for me. I need to beagle this mold just to be able to shoot .315 (at least) boolits.

Yup, I've had 2 of the older Ideal 311291 molds that dropped at .313". They show up on EvilBay once in a while.
