ddixie dropped buy and loaned me his old 358439 (HP) mould to experiment with. His mould is an older unvented IDEAL version with the sqaure lube grooves. I must say his dropped bullets very smoothly compared to mine !

Here is a photo with his hollow point 3584439 bullets compared with my own "modern" Lyman 358429 with square grooves. There is a design difference.

Thanks for the fine pictures on this one. A new wrinkle (not on your bullets though) to me. Pictures are, indeed, worth a thousand words.

I read recently, maybe in Cast Bullets, that the difference between the 439 and the 429 hp was in the depth of the pin and corresponding overall weight. The 358439 is supposedly the lighter with a deeper pin depth. Almost 10 grains difference was quoted by the author. I had always thought that they were the same. Gianni.

That front driving band on the 359439 is way longer than on the "modern" 429. Thats the way they were supposed to be built.

This is another example of Lyman failing to see why they should be bring back all the old designs. I'd buy a copy of that HP mould in a heartbeat.

I agree wholeheartedly on bringing back the old classics.....especially the HPs.

The front driving band is usually the difference on the 439s. The noses tend to be shorter on the 429s as well as they tend to be close to too long for S & Ws unless seated deep.

In my stash are two 358431s, two 358429s, two 358439s and a 358429HP. All of them make good bullets and each is just a bit different. So much for standard designs.

The HP pins on all are .156". I have made a .125" diameter pin for the 358429HP and I like the smaller diameter cavity better as the walls don't seem so fragile.

This series is a darn good design. The older Ideals seem to be the best and larger in diameter if you're looking on the "Bay" for one./beagle
