I got a new 429-214 grain 44 swc from Lee. I'm looking for a good starting point for Clay's, HS-6, or Titegroup. I found my powders for 240 grain swc's, but seating depth is much deeper. Loading primarily 44 special.

Afraid I don`t use those powders. I use 14 gr. AA#5, 12 gr. Unique or 11 gr. 231 or Hp-38 as starter loading for my LEE mould. I imagine the Lyman 429215 would be similar load data.:castmine:Robert

Holy Cow that's a hot load!

My Accurate Arms data, going all the way back to 1988, only allows for a maximum of 10.9 grains of AA#5 for anything in the .44 caliber, Special or Magnum--and that data was scrapped over fifteen years ago as being too hot.

AA#5 is one of my favorite handgun powders, and in the .44 Special with the Lee 214SWC boolit, I'm using 6.9 grains fired by a Winchester Large Pistol Magnum primer. Max (recommended) load for that one is 7.9 grains. Your load is almost doubling that.

Recluse, I thought they were hot too, I assume he is not loading for the special. I settled on 3.5 grains of Clays. Hodgdon lists 3.2 to 4.0 for a 240 LSWC, so I went about midway as a starting point since the 214 leaves more space in the case, I'll consider that a low charge. I plan to test them in my 44 Contender first, can't hurt it. Then to a Blackhawk, really want it for my S & W 24, but I won't risk that gun on anything.

I load that bullet in .44 spl cases for my .44 mag Super Blackhawk. The most accurate load of me is 7 grs. of 231 followed by 6 or 7 grs of Green Dot. The 7 gr loads run in the 900 fps range out of my 7.5" bbl. They will easily stay inside the 10 ring on a 50 yd bullseye target, I only wish I could!

I have not had any good results with this boolit, tried many "known good" loads
and it has not performed beyond mediocre for me so far. I have had far better
results with RCBS 44-250-K or 429421. I wanted a bit lighter boolit for 'kid loads'
and finally wound up with a commercial TC 180 plain base, accurate and low
recoil with ~ 4.5 Clays in .44 mag brass (memory only, DON'T depend on that) -
whatever it was, it was a very light load.
