If some of you who cast .22 cal could measure the hole in the sprue plate on some of your moulds and reply back here it would be a help to me. I made a mould for Paper Patching in 22 because of my excellent results in other cartridges.

I have shot my 221 Fireball with J-bullets and it will make one hole groups all day but now I want to do the same with PP, just like my .458WM. If interested in some pics of the mould see:

In my old Lyman 225 96 mould the hole in the sprue plate is .150 , takes up most of the base. The mould casts well if kept hot and you leave a big puddle on the sprue plate. Haven't had much luck getting it to shoot in my .222 yet. Will have to try harder alloy.
You must have little tiny fingers to patch those little bullets. I'd like to try PP's in my 1895 Marlin 45-70.

My Lyman moulds all run about .150, the RCBS ones about .125-.130. I would like to try one with a smaller hole, but have not gotten to it yet. Billy

I made a pair of new plates for my 225462 and 225415 with .078 (2mm) holes. Getting much better results.

Thanks for the replys, I appreciate the information. I'll make a new plate and try it out. With this first one it was actually distorting the base when the sprue sheared off so I knew I had it wrong.

My big three molds just use the same spur plate that's one size fits all. I've a custom mold with a 1/16th inch hole that works much better. That 2mm looks about right.

Yes my Saeco bends the base when cutting the spur as the plate hole is almost the same size as the base.

Both my Lyman & Lee .22 cal molds have .15" diameter sprue holes.
