So my girlfriend was out and about and I've been telling her if she sees powder to call me and I'll tell her if I need it. Well she thinks she's going to surprise me and brings home 2 cans of 4198 when i really need 4895. I don't own any of the calibers this powder was designed for. Does anyone have load data for any other calibers? 30/30, 308, 06, 270,762x54? Or do i need to be looking to trade this powder?

4198 is my favorite for 308 cast.

It's particularly good in the FR-8 Mauser with 18" bbl - no more flame thrower.

I use it in 30-30, 35, 307, and 45-70 you'll like it.

Only data I remember off-hand is 18/23gr for 173gr cast in 30-30.

Used it in the Krag, '06, and 30-30 for cast boolits.
It'll work for you too!!

I bought three lbs of the H4198 for cast boolit loads in my 223, 243 and 270.
The new Hodgdon 4198 is a short cut. I used to use the old IMR 4198 in AR-15 loads where it was and is my SP-1's favorite powder. The new short cut is way nicer to work with. Suppose the long grain would give better bulk for our reduced loads but I'll skip that grain cutting any day.

My new Lyman 49th edition gives 4198 data for 308 cast bullets for all but one of them.
For my 270 I have a note here for 23.0 gr for 1,900 fps with 150 grain bullet.
For the 7.52 R. with Lyman #314299 start 20.0 gr for 1497 to 32.5 gr for 2108.
For the venerable 30-30 with #311291 start 18.0gr for 1606 fps. to 24.5 for 2007 fps.

I use IMR 4198 in .22 Hornet and .223 bolt guns and 30-30 lever guns but behind jacketed bullets.

Don't let that girlfriend get away from you. Women who help their other half in the gun world are all keepers. I had one marriage go south because of my love for this hobby. When a primer went off in 1968 while using the original Lee loader and watching TV She went nuts and called me crazy and said I was going to blow up the house. Those late nights in the garage loading didn't help. My wife of today called me to let me know that primers were available at the gun store. Big difference!!

My '03A3 shoots best with IMR-4198 under a 312-185. 25 gr with throw it at around 2100 fps. It's also one of the main powders (other than Unique) I like to use for the 54R with cast as well. The load data for that reads pretty close to the same.

I just picked up 2# of this stuff for 10 bucks. It is in the older can's but they were never opened. Load data in the lee and speer manuals were short on cast loads for 30-30 and 308, in the heavier boolits. The lee manual only listed data for 4198 for rounds in the lower gr. range. Do any of you have any recipes for this stuff in 30-30 or for any of the heavier cal. like 168 or 175, using .311or .308??

I loaded and shot a few rounds today out of my 30-30, as a safety test starting on the low end of the few lisitngs I have for it. 19gr of this stuff did well at 50 yards with a 150 gr. GC boolit. I just wanted to hear some real data from some real tests, if ya' got any. Thanks. Joel

Works great in 45/70,.444, .450 marlin, 458 win mag. All with cast bullets. I,m sure if you check a couple of manuals you will find that is pretty versital powder.

I use it in 45-70 and 30-30 with Jacketed bullets. Works pretty well. Matter of fact. It's the only powder that I use in both those calibers.

Have Lyman's GREAT new 49th edition reloading Handbook here. I'll try not to make a typ-O and blow up your gun.

They list the two current production molds for the 30-30. For the 173 grain flat point #311041 their accuracy load is the start charge of IMR-4198.

Start 18.0gr for 1602 fps to max of 23.5gr for 1999 fps. Firearm used was universal receiver with 24” barrel”

Same 173 grain bullet in 308 Win.
Start 24.0 gr for 1897 to 31.0 gr for 2356 fps and a whopping 51,600 p.s.i.

They list seven boolits for the 308 and list a 4198 load for all but the 115 grain carbine bullet.

Thats the money right there! Thanks Gabby. I am looking for a copy as we speak. I felt pretty good with 19 gr. and the round barely kicked out my 94 winchester. I loaded a few 175 gr. BULLETS in the same gun as well. Same charge weight. It was a nice round. I really like the stuff, and for the price, it was tought to beat. Thanks for the help guys. Joel

Does she have a single cute sister? Speer 13th ed has 30-06 reduced loads 180 gr 26-30 gr imr 4198 1723-2000fps and for 200 gr boolits 27 to 31 gr imr 4198. Lyman 44th edition has 30-06 loads using 4198 for all weights of cast boolits from 150gr to 220gr. Widners had some spp210 powder for $119 for 8 lbs hopefully they will get more at that price i have had great success with it using imr 4198 data in 223 from 50 gr to 65 gr bullets using near max to max loads with no sign of any problems that is what i have tried so far

jcw1970-I would gladly pay you your price for half a pound of that. I've been looking under every rock and curry combed the country side for a pound or two of it....I'd even settle for a cup full!!:)

What's your load with the 4198????
I've been using 700X with 311/200gr GC.
Light target load.
Shoots great out to 200yds.

See the Hodgdon reloading data website for all kinds of 4198 loads. I personally use the powder for .223 reloading.

I use 22 grains of it behind an NOE 326471 215 grain cast bullet in 8mm Mauser. That's giving me about 1555 FPS average.
