has anyone had success with shooting out to 600 yards with cast bullets, I know this is done with big stuff like 45-70. I want to know about smaller bore stuff. 7mm .308 etc.

I tried to search the site but it kept coming up with some kind of error.

I don't see why not.

I shoot 200m with a 30-30 TC. My velocity was about 1600fps, and it was an extremely accurate bullet.

I would guess that out of rifle I would get more velocity and therefore the bullet should fly about the same. i.e. should stabilize, and not do anything weird.

If all you are doing is punching paper it should work.

There were a couple of guys shooting '94 .38-55's with cast bullets at the Quigley match last week. 795 yds. to the buffalos.

HI,
I shoot 200 yds w/ revolver cast & 250yds. w/ cast rifle 7MM/06 is all. not good enough to shoot any farther consistantly.

Boomer, you used to have some 7mm06 loads that rang that 600 yd. gong pretty easily.

I've done some 300 yard shooting with Lyman's #311332 (180 grain) in .30-06 out of Springfield 1903s and my M1 with good results. Never did any really long range shooting though.

See att'd. pic. Coyote was just short of the big clump of green just to the right of center on the horizon, between the two next 'lower' ones...........~880 yds. missed just under his belly dammit, but stung him with dirt. For a moment he didn't know which way to scoot cuz the sound hadn't reached him yet. (I had to hold about 20 'yotes high, LOL.)

#5 Carbine, BSA mildot variable in S&A Instamount set @ 9x, LEE 312-185 beagled WDWW, CCI 250 and 42.0 grs. WW760, zeroed @ 300 yds.

So yeah, I think you'll be OK.

HI,
That range has been shut down by Orem, & 3 other places I shot at last year are now posted NO SHOOTING. by Provo .
The Pinko Commie Fagots.
Eyes are not what they use to be.
And those were with J-bullets. In the !960-70's.

theres a rifle silhouette range locally and i get to shoot both the 243 and 308 with cast. unfortunately, i can only ring the rams at 500 meters, they won't go down. all the others go down with boring regularity. last time i went, a friend put orange golf balls at 200 and 300 meters. i could occasionally hit the 200 but couldn't even see them at 300 with my 7x scope.

Im going to try my 7mm-08 at distance this week with 145g rcbs bullets to see how well they fly.

A good friend use to shoot Highpower matches, last course is 600 yards, with cast on occasion. IIRC, he was using up some Rx21 powder with 311335 and took a lot of razzing but, finished near the middle of the pack.

In prior years, it was not uncommon for folks to shoot cast bullets in military style matches out to 600 yards. Windage and elevation...it is all about windage and elevation.

I shot NMC matches with .30-06 CBs' at about 1550 fps; there was no problem at 200 & 300 yards but at 600 yards the mid-range trajectory height is about 20 feet, as opposed to 3 feet for a jacketed BT bullet. This puts it up into the winds pretty badly, and I have had one blow over to the next target. Also it is subsonic when it gets to the pits - the target pullers sometimes miss the little ffft sound because all the JB shooters' bullets make the supersonic crack. When it is calm and you get onto the target the grouping is reasonable.

I have a 12"x15" steel target that I shoot at, at 250 yards I could hit it every time with the 7mm-08, when I get some time Ill put it out to 400, then farther and farther.
